# Verification Before Completion

## Overview

Claiming work is complete without verification is dishonesty, not efficiency.

**Core principle:** Evidence before claims, always.

**Violating the letter of this rule is violating the spirit of this rule.**

## The Iron Law

If you haven't run the verification command in this message, you cannot claim it passes.

## The Gate Function

BEFORE claiming any status or expressing satisfaction:

1. IDENTIFY: What command proves this claim?
2. RUN: Execute the FULL command (fresh, complete)
3. READ: Full output, check exit code, count failures
4. VERIFY: Does output confirm the claim?
   - If NO: State actual status with evidence
   - If YES: State claim WITH evidence
5. ONLY THEN: Make the claim

Skip any step = lying, not verifying

## Common Failures

## Red Flags - STOP

- Using "should", "probably", "seems to"
- Expressing satisfaction before verification ("Great!", "Perfect!", "Done!", etc.)
- About to commit/push/PR without verification
- Trusting agent success reports
- Relying on partial verification
- Thinking "just this once"
- Tired and wanting work over
- **ANY wording implying success without having run verification**

## Rationalization Prevention

## Why This Matters

From 24 failure memories:
- your human partner said "I don't believe you" - trust broken
- Undefined functions shipped - would crash
- Missing requirements shipped - incomplete features
- Time wasted on false completion → redirect → rework
- Violates: "Honesty is a core value. If you lie, you'll be replaced."

## When To Apply

**ALWAYS before:**
- ANY variation of success/completion claims
- ANY expression of satisfaction
- ANY positive statement about work state
- Committing, PR creation, task completion
- Moving to next task
- Delegating to agents

**Rule applies to:**
- Exact phrases
- Paraphrases and synonyms
- Implications of success
- ANY communication suggesting completion/correctness

Run the command. Read the output. THEN claim the result.

This skill enforces a strict practice of running fresh verification commands and presenting evidence before claiming work is complete, fixed, or passing. It prevents premature satisfaction, commits, or PRs by requiring concrete output, exit codes, and explicit checks. The goal is honesty: evidence before assertions.

How this skill works

Before making any completion claim, identify the exact verification command that proves the claim, execute it fully, read the entire output and exit code, and verify the result matches the claim. If verification fails, report the actual status with evidence; if it passes, state the claim and include the verification evidence. Skipping or partial checks are treated as a failure to verify.

When to use it

  • Right before committing, pushing, or opening a pull request
  • When declaring tests, linting, or builds are passing
  • Before marking a bug as fixed or a feature as complete
  • When moving to the next task or closing a ticket
  • After agent-driven changes or automated runs

Best practices

  • Always run the full verification command freshly in the current context
  • Capture and include the full command output and exit code when reporting
  • Avoid words like "should", "probably", or expressions of satisfaction until verified
  • Perform red-green regression verification for tests: fail, fix, fail, pass
  • Treat agent reports as prompts to run your own verification

Example use cases

  • Run the test suite and paste the final summary (e.g., "34/34 passed") before claiming all tests pass
  • Execute the build command and include the exit code and build log before announcing a successful build
  • After an agent applies a patch, show the VCS diff and re-run relevant tests before saying the issue is resolved
  • For linting, run the full linter and show "0 errors" rather than assuming cleanliness
  • When closing a ticket, list the checklist and verification outputs that demonstrate each requirement is met

FAQ

What counts as sufficient evidence?

The full verification command, its complete output, and a successful exit code or explicit confirmation from the tool are sufficient.

Can I rely on a previous run?

No. Evidence must be fresh and executed in the current environment and state before claiming success.
