Python

This simple MCP server provides a tool for fetching website content through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It allows you to retrieve HTML content from any URL by using a standardized interface.

Installation

To use the MCP simple tool, you'll need to have Python and uv installed on your system. The server is run using the uv command line utility.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.7 or higher
  • UV package manager

Running the Server

You can start the MCP server using either stdio (the default transport) or SSE transport:

# Using stdio transport (default)
uv run mcp-simple-tool

# Using SSE transport on custom port
uv run mcp-simple-tool --transport sse --port 8000

Available Tools

The server exposes a single tool called "fetch" which accepts one required argument:

  • url: The URL of the website you want to fetch

Using the Client

To interact with the MCP server, you need to use an MCP client. Here's how to use the server with a Python client:

Python Client Example

import asyncio
from mcp.client.session import ClientSession
from mcp.client.stdio import StdioServerParameters, stdio_client

async def main():
    async with stdio_client(
        StdioServerParameters(command="uv", args=["run", "mcp-simple-tool"])
    ) as (read, write):
        async with ClientSession(read, write) as session:
            await session.initialize()

            # List available tools
            tools = await session.list_tools()
            print(tools)

            # Call the fetch tool
            result = await session.call_tool("fetch", {"url": "https://example.com"})
            print(result)

asyncio.run(main())

This example:

  1. Creates a stdio client that runs the MCP server
  2. Establishes a session with the server
  3. Lists the available tools
  4. Calls the "fetch" tool with a URL parameter
  5. Prints the result (the HTML content of the requested website)

How to add this MCP server to Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "cursor-rules-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "cursor-rules-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
