This Python MCP server integrates with Cline in VSCode to search files in your filesystem by path fragments and return results in JSON format. It makes finding files quick and convenient directly from your VSCode environment.

Requirements

  • Python 3.9 or higher
  • Python mcp package
  • VSCode with Cline extension installed

Installation

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://github.com/kyan9400/file-finder-mcp.git
    cd file-finder-mcp
    
  2. Install the required Python package:

    pip install mcp
    
  3. Update the Cline configuration file to include the MCP server:

    • Open or create the Cline configuration file (e.g., C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Code\User\cline_config.json on Windows)
    • Add the following configuration:

Running the Server

For manual testing, start the server with:

python file_finder_server.py

Note that Cline will automatically launch the server when you use the tool.

Using with Cline

  1. Open VSCode with the Cline extension active
  2. Test the server by entering the following query in the Cline interface:
    Find files in the filesystem containing the fragment "test"
    
  3. Cline will invoke the find_files tool and display a JSON response similar to:

Additional Information

  • The search starts from the current working directory where the server is running
  • Searches are case-insensitive
  • File sizes are reported in bytes and creation dates in ISO format

How to add this MCP server to Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
