This MCP server provides web search capabilities for Claude, allowing access to up-to-date information from the web through a standardized interface. It leverages Claude's web search API and includes features like domain filtering and configurable search results.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18 or higher
  • An Anthropic API key with web search enabled
  • Claude Desktop app for testing

Installation

Clone and Set Up

git clone https://github.com/Doriandarko/claude-search-mcp.git
cd claude-search-mcp

Install Dependencies and Build

npm install
npm run build

Make Available System-wide

npm link

This makes the mcp-server-claude-search command available globally, allowing the Claude Desktop app to find it.

Configuration

Configure Claude Desktop App

Open your Claude Desktop app's configuration file (usually claude_desktop_config.json) and add/update the entry:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "claude-search": {
      "command": "mcp-server-claude-search",
      "env": {
        "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "YOUR_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY_HERE"
      }
    }
  }
}

Replace "YOUR_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY_HERE" with your actual Anthropic API key.

Usage

With Claude Desktop App

  1. Start or restart your Claude Desktop application
  2. The app will automatically launch the MCP server when needed
  3. You can now use web search capabilities in your conversations with Claude

Manual Execution (for testing)

Run the server manually using any of these methods:

# Using the globally linked command
mcp-server-claude-search

# For development with auto-restart
npm run dev

# Running the compiled code directly
npm start

Search Tool Parameters

When using the web search tool, you can customize the search with these parameters:

  • query (required): The search query string
  • maxResults (optional): Maximum number of search results to return (default: 5)
  • allowedDomains (optional): Array of domains to include in search results (e.g., ["example.com", "wikipedia.org"])
  • blockedDomains (optional): Array of domains to exclude from search results

How to add this MCP server to Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "cursor-rules-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "cursor-rules-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
