This MCP server provides a Model Context Protocol implementation for interacting with the Plausible Analytics API, allowing AI models to query and access analytics data directly from Plausible.

Installation

To use the Plausible MCP server, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Download or clone the repository
  2. Install dependencies (if not already done):
    npm install

  3. Build the project:
    npm run build

Configuration

Setting up with Claude Desktop

To integrate the Plausible MCP server with Claude Desktop:

  1. Add the following configuration to your Claude Desktop MCP Server config file:
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "mcp-plausible-local": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/path/to/project/dist/index.js"],
      "env": {
        "PLAUSIBLE_API_URL": "https://plausible.io/api/v2",
        "PLAUSIBLE_API_KEY": "your_actual_api_key"
      }
    }
  }
}
  1. Replace /path/to/project/ with the actual path to where you've installed the MCP server
  2. Replace your_actual_api_key with your Plausible API key

Environment Variables

The server requires the following environment variables:

  • PLAUSIBLE_API_URL: The Plausible API endpoint (default is https://plausible.io/api/v2)
  • PLAUSIBLE_API_KEY: Your Plausible API key for authentication

Usage

Running the Server

To run the server directly:

node dist/index.js

For development with automatic rebuilding:

npm run watch

Example Queries

Once configured, you can interact with the Plausible MCP server through Claude Desktop using natural language queries such as:

  • "Can you provide a daily overview of my analytics for example.com?"
  • "Can you generate relevant analytics reports from my Plausible account for the domain example.com?"

Simply replace "example.com" with your actual domain that's registered in your Plausible account.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with the MCP server:

  • Verify your API key is correct
  • Check that the path in your Claude Desktop configuration is accurate
  • Ensure the server is running before making queries through Claude
  • Confirm your domain is properly set up in Plausible Analytics

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "mcp-plausible-local" '{"command":"node","args":["/path/to/project/dist/index.js"],"env":{"PLAUSIBLE_API_URL":"https://plausible.io/api/v2","PLAUSIBLE_API_KEY":"test_api_key"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-plausible-local": {
            "command": "node",
            "args": [
                "/path/to/project/dist/index.js"
            ],
            "env": {
                "PLAUSIBLE_API_URL": "https://plausible.io/api/v2",
                "PLAUSIBLE_API_KEY": "test_api_key"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-plausible-local": {
            "command": "node",
            "args": [
                "/path/to/project/dist/index.js"
            ],
            "env": {
                "PLAUSIBLE_API_URL": "https://plausible.io/api/v2",
                "PLAUSIBLE_API_KEY": "test_api_key"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
