# Agent MD Refactor

Refactor bloated agent instruction files (AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, COPILOT.md, etc.) to follow **progressive disclosure principles** - keeping essentials at root and organizing the rest into linked, categorized files.

## Process

### Phase 1: Find Contradictions

Identify any instructions that conflict with each other.

**Look for:**
- Contradictory style guidelines (e.g., "use semicolons" vs "no semicolons")
- Conflicting workflow instructions
- Incompatible tool preferences
- Mutually exclusive patterns

**For each contradiction found:**

Ask the user to resolve before proceeding.

### Phase 2: Identify the Essentials

Extract ONLY what belongs in the root agent file. The root should be minimal - information that applies to **every single task**.

**Essential content (keep in root):**

| Package manager | Only if not npm (e.g., "Uses pnpm") |
| Non-standard commands | Custom build/test/typecheck commands |
| Critical overrides | Things that MUST override defaults |

**NOT essential (move to linked files):**
- Language-specific conventions
- Testing guidelines
- Code style details
- Framework patterns
- Documentation standards
- Git workflow details

### Phase 3: Group the Rest

Organize remaining instructions into logical categories.

**Common categories:**

| `code-style.md` | Formatting, naming, comments, structure |

| `security.md` | Auth patterns, input validation, secrets |

**Grouping rules:**
1. Each file should be self-contained for its topic
2. Aim for 3-8 files (not too granular, not too broad)
3. Name files clearly: `{topic}.md`
4. Include only actionable instructions

### Phase 5: Flag for Deletion

Identify instructions that should be removed entirely.

**Delete if:**

It reduces cognitive load, resolves contradictions, and produces a clear file hierarchy so agents and humans can find actionable guidance quickly.

How this skill works

The skill scans the monolithic instruction file to detect contradictions, redundancies, and non-universal rules. It extracts only universal essentials into a concise root file and groups the rest into 3–8 clearly named topic files with self-contained, actionable rules. It also flags vague or redundant instructions for deletion and emits a verification checklist and file templates.

When to use it

  • Your AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md is overlong or hard to navigate
  • You want to apply progressive disclosure to agent instructions
  • There are conflicting or duplicated directives in the root file
  • You need a maintainable structure for onboarding new agents or contributors
  • You want a root file under 50 lines with linked, focused docs

Best practices

  • Keep the root file limited to universal rules and critical overrides only
  • Group related guidance into 3–8 topic files named {topic}.md
  • Make each linked file self-contained, actionable, and example-driven
  • Flag vague or redundant lines for deletion rather than burying them
  • Resolve contradictions before splitting; ask clarifying questions where needed
