# Advanced Elicitation

## Overview

Meta-cognitive reasoning applied to AI outputs. Makes AI reconsider its own work through 15+ systematic methods.

**Core Principle**: First-pass responses are often good but not great. Elicitation forces deeper thinking.

## When to Use

**Use when:**

- Making important decisions (architecture, security, major features)
- Solving complex problems (multiple stakeholders, unclear requirements)
- Producing critical outputs (specs, plans, designs)
- Quality matters more than speed

**Don't use when:**

- Simple queries ("What is X?")
- Routine tasks (formatting, simple refactoring)
- Time-sensitive (emergency fixes)
- Budget-constrained (2x cost)

## How It Works

1. **Generate Initial Response**: Agent produces first-pass answer
2. **Apply Elicitation Method**: Pick 1-3 methods based on context
3. **Reconsider**: Agent re-evaluates using method
4. **Synthesize**: Combine insights, produce improved output

**Description**: Challenge every assumption with "why?" until reaching bedrock.

## Security Controls

**SEC-AE-001: Input Validation**

- Method names must match `/^[a-z][a-z0-9-]*$/`
- Max 5 methods per invocation
- Invalid methods rejected with error

**SEC-AE-002: Cost Budget Enforcement**

- Check session budget before elicitation
- Track cumulative cost
- Fail gracefully if budget exceeded

**SEC-AE-003: Rate Limiting**

- Max 10 elicitations per session

This skill applies meta-cognitive reasoning to improve AI outputs by forcing the agent to reconsider and refine its first-pass answers. It uses a library of 15+ structured reasoning methods to surface hidden assumptions, identify risks, and produce higher-confidence results. Use it when quality and robustness matter more than raw speed.

How this skill works

The agent generates an initial response, then selects one or more elicitation methods (manually or automatically). Each method—like first principles, pre-mortem, red-team/blue-team, or bias checks—re-examines the response, produces targeted diagnostics, and recommends or synthesizes improvements. The final output merges original content with prioritized changes and a confidence assessment.

When to use it

  • Major decisions: architecture, security, vendor selection, or product direction
  • Complex, ambiguous problems with multiple stakeholders or constraints
  • High-stakes deliverables: specs, launch plans, compliance artifacts
  • Design reviews, risk assessments, and long-term strategy work
  • When you need defensible justifications and mitigations for choices

Best practices

  • Auto-select 2–3 complementary methods for balanced coverage (one critic, one constructive)
  • Start with a quick single-method pass for scope, then a deeper multi-method review for finalization
  • Limit elicitation depth based on time/budget; thorough reviews cost more compute/time
  • Combine adversarial methods (red-team) with corrective ones (bias check, FMEA) for robust mitigation
  • Document the chosen methods and confidence levels alongside the revised output

How many methods should I run per review?

Typically 1–3 methods. Use one method for quick insight and two or three complementary methods for a thorough review.

Does elicitation slow down output delivery?

Yes—deeper elicitation increases time and cost. Reserve full reviews for high-value or high-risk work.
