This skill uses claudemem's callers/callees analysis for implementation investigation.

# Developer Detective Skill

**Version:** 3.3.0
**Role:** Software Developer
**Purpose:** Implementation investigation using AST callers/callees and impact analysis

## Role Context

You are investigating this codebase as a **Software Developer**. Your focus is on:
- **Implementation details** - How code actually works
- **Data flow** - How data moves through the system (via callees)
- **Usage patterns** - How code is used (via callers)
- **Dependencies** - What a function needs to work
- **Impact analysis** - What breaks if you change something

## Why callers/callees is Perfect for Development

The `callers` and `callees` commands show you:
- **callers** = Every place that calls this code (impact of changes)
- **callees** = Every function this code calls (its dependencies)
- **Exact file:line** = Precise locations for reading/editing
- **Call kinds** = call, import, extends, implements

**Why impact matters**:
- `callers` shows only direct callers (1 level)
- `impact` shows ALL transitive callers (full tree)
- Critical for refactoring decisions

## FALLBACK PROTOCOL

**CRITICAL: Never use grep/find/Glob without explicit user approval.**

If claudemem fails or returns irrelevant results:

1. **STOP** - Do not silently switch tools
2. **DIAGNOSE** - Run `claudemem status`
3. **REPORT** - Tell user what happened
4. **ASK** - Use AskUserQuestion for next steps

How this skill works

The skill runs claudemem agents like callers, callees, context, symbol, and impact to inspect the code's AST and call graph. callers lists direct call sites; callees lists dependencies a symbol calls; context returns definition plus callers and callees. Results include exact file:line, call kind (call, import, extends, implements), and transitive callers for deep impact analysis.

When to use it

  • You need to find where a function, class, or symbol is defined.
  • You want every place that calls a symbol to assess change impact.
  • You must trace outgoing data flow and dependencies of a function.
  • Preparing a refactor and need a full caller tree before editing.
  • Adding features and you must follow existing implementation patterns.

Best practices

  • Verify claudemem is installed and index is fresh before investigating.
  • Use symbol → callees → callers → context workflow: find, trace, validate, read only targeted file:line ranges.
  • Always run callers/impact before modifying code to avoid breaking callers.
  • Do not truncate claudemem output; use built-in limits or full output for accuracy.
  • If claudemem returns empty or error, run status/diagnostics and ask before switching tools.

FAQ

What if the claudemem index is stale or missing?

Stop and reindex or ask for permission to create the index. The skill checks for .claudemem/index.db and will prompt reindex when files are newer than the index.

When should I use impact vs callers?

Use callers for quick direct-call checks; use impact (v0.4.0+) when you need the full transitive caller tree to understand ripple effects.
