# PMO Retrospective Skill

Systematic capture and application of lessons learned at portfolio level.

## Purpose

This skill provides a framework for:
- Lessons learned capture
- Pattern identification
- Process improvement
- Organizational learning
- Knowledge transfer

## Retrospective Types

### Type 1: Project Closure Retrospective

**Trigger:** Project completion or termination
**Scope:** Single project
**Participants:** Project team, sponsor, key stakeholders

### Type 2: Portfolio Period Review

**Trigger:** Quarterly or annual review
**Scope:** All projects in period
**Participants:** PMO, project managers, executives

### Gate 1: Context Setting

Overview

This skill implements a portfolio-level retrospective framework to capture lessons learned, expose recurring patterns, and convert insights into tracked improvement actions. It standardizes retrospective types, gates, and outputs so PMO teams can improve processes, share knowledge, and reduce repeat failures. The design enforces blameless analysis, clear ownership, and measurable success criteria.

How this skill works

The skill guides teams through six gates: Context Setting, Data Collection, Reflection, Pattern Analysis, Action Planning, and Knowledge Sharing. At each gate it defines required inputs, participant roles, checklist actions, and a specific output document to record findings and decisions. It includes criteria to STOP and report when retrospectives would be incomplete or unsafe and a template for a consolidated Lessons Learned report and execution metrics.

When to use it

  • At project completion or termination to capture closure lessons
  • During quarterly or annual portfolio reviews to spot cross-project trends
