# Wolfram Alpha API Automation via Rube MCP

Automate Wolfram Alpha API operations through Composio's Wolfram Alpha API toolkit via Rube MCP.

**Toolkit docs**: [composio.dev/toolkits/wolfram_alpha_api](https://composio.dev/toolkits/wolfram_alpha_api)

## Prerequisites

- Rube MCP must be connected (RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS available)
- Active Wolfram Alpha API connection via `RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS` with toolkit `wolfram_alpha_api`
- Always call `RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS` first to get current tool schemas

## Setup

**Get Rube MCP**: Add `https://rube.app/mcp` as an MCP server in your client configuration. No API keys needed — just add the endpoint and it works.

1. Verify Rube MCP is available by confirming `RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS` responds
2. Call `RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS` with toolkit `wolfram_alpha_api`
3. If connection is not ACTIVE, follow the returned auth link to complete setup
4. Confirm connection status shows ACTIVE before running any workflows

## Tool Discovery

Always discover available tools before executing workflows:

```
RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS
queries: [{use_case: "Wolfram Alpha API operations", known_fields: ""}]
session: {generate_id: true}
```

This returns available tool slugs, input schemas, recommended execution plans, and known pitfalls.

## Core Workflow Pattern

### Step 1: Discover Available Tools

```
RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS
queries: [{use_case: "your specific Wolfram Alpha API task"}]
session: {id: "existing_session_id"}
```

### Step 2: Check Connection

```
RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS
toolkits: ["wolfram_alpha_api"]
session_id: "your_session_id"
```

### Step 3: Execute Tools

```
RUBE_MULTI_EXECUTE_TOOL
tools: [{
  tool_slug: "TOOL_SLUG_FROM_SEARCH",
  arguments: {/* schema-compliant args from search results */}
}]
memory: {}
session_id: "your_session_id"
```

## Known Pitfalls

- **Always search first**: Tool schemas change. Never hardcode tool slugs or arguments without calling `RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS`
- **Check connection**: Verify `RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS` shows ACTIVE status before executing tools
- **Schema compliance**: Use exact field names and types from the search results
- **Memory parameter**: Always include `memory` in `RUBE_MULTI_EXECUTE_TOOL` calls, even if empty (`{}`)
- **Session reuse**: Reuse session IDs within a workflow. Generate new ones for new workflows
- **Pagination**: Check responses for pagination tokens and continue fetching until complete

## Quick Reference

| Operation | Approach |
|-----------|----------|
| Find tools | `RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS` with Wolfram Alpha API-specific use case |
| Connect | `RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS` with toolkit `wolfram_alpha_api` |
| Execute | `RUBE_MULTI_EXECUTE_TOOL` with discovered tool slugs |
| Bulk ops | `RUBE_REMOTE_WORKBENCH` with `run_composio_tool()` |
| Full schema | `RUBE_GET_TOOL_SCHEMAS` for tools with `schemaRef` |

Overview

This skill automates Wolfram Alpha API tasks through Composio’s Wolfram Alpha toolkit using the Rube MCP. It provides a predictable workflow: discover tools, verify connections, then execute API operations reliably. The skill enforces live tool discovery and schema compliance to avoid breaking changes.

How this skill works

First, call RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS to retrieve current tool slugs, input schemas, recommended execution plans, and pitfalls. Next, verify an active Wolfram Alpha connection with RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS. Finally, run operations via RUBE_MULTI_EXECUTE_TOOL or RUBE_REMOTE_WORKBENCH using the discovered tool slugs and schema-compliant arguments.

When to use it

  • Automating Wolfram Alpha queries, computations, or data retrieval in workflows
  • Building reproducible agent tasks that must adapt to live tool schema changes
  • Running bulk or batched Wolfram Alpha operations through Rube MCP
  • Integrating Wolfram Alpha results into larger Claude agent workflows
  • When you need reliable connection management and session reuse for API calls

Best practices

  • Always call RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS first — do not hardcode tool slugs or argument shapes
  • Check RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS and ensure the toolkit status is ACTIVE before executing
  • Pass exact field names and types from the returned schema; validate inputs beforehand
  • Include a memory object in RUBE_MULTI_EXECUTE_TOOL calls, even if empty ({}), and reuse session IDs within a workflow
  • Handle pagination tokens in responses and iterate until all pages are fetched

Example use cases

  • Run a sequence of Wolfram Alpha calculations as part of a data-enrichment pipeline using RUBE_MULTI_EXECUTE_TOOL
  • Discover available Wolfram Alpha query tools dynamically and select the best one for a user question
  • Execute bulk queries via RUBE_REMOTE_WORKBENCH with run_composio_tool() for large-scale analysis
  • Automate a scheduled workflow that fetches and stores computational results, respecting connection and schema checks
  • Build interactive agent features that query Wolfram Alpha and return structured results to users

FAQ

What must I do before executing any tool?

Always call RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS to fetch current tool schemas and then confirm the Wolfram Alpha connection is ACTIVE via RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS.

Can I hardcode tool slugs and argument shapes?

No. Tool schemas can change. Always discover tools at runtime and use the exact field names and types returned by the search.
