# Quality Checks

Run comprehensive quality gate checks on code changes. Orchestrates quality checks at key lifecycle points in the development workflow.

## When to Use This Skill

- Before starting significant code changes (pre-edit baseline)
- After completing code changes (post-edit validation)
- Before marking a task as complete (final quality gate)
- When asked to run "quality check" or "quality gate"

## Sub-Skills

Quality checks orchestrate these sub-skills:

| Sub-Skill | Purpose | Skill Location |
|-----------|---------|----------------|
| `testing-standards` | Validates test coverage | [SKILL.md](.claude/skills/testing-standards/SKILL.md) |
| `doc-validation-rfc-37` | Validates documentation | [SKILL.md](.claude/skills/doc-validation-rfc-37/SKILL.md) |
| `coding-standards` | Enforces code style | [SKILL.md](.claude/skills/coding-standards/SKILL.md) |
| `security-review` | Checks for vulnerabilities | [SKILL.md](.claude/skills/security-review/SKILL.md) |

## Lifecycle Hooks

| Hook | When | Purpose |
|------|------|---------|
| `pre-edit` | Before changes | Capture baseline metrics |
| `post-edit` | After changes | Validate changes meet standards |
| `on-stop` | Before completion | Final quality gate |

## IDE Integration

The quality gateway integrates with AI IDEs through hooks:

| IDE | Integration Method | Reference |
|-----|-------------------|-----------|
| Claude Code | Native hooks in settings.json | `assets/claude-quality-hooks.md` |
| Cursor IDE | Rules + Commands | `assets/cursor-quality-integration.md` |

For hook implementation patterns, see the [ai-agent-hooks](.claude/skills/ai-agent-hooks/SKILL.md) skill.

## Quality Checks

### Pre-Edit (Baseline)

Before making changes:
1. Record current test coverage
2. Note existing linting errors
3. Capture documentation state

### Post-Edit (Validation)

After making changes:
1. Verify test coverage maintained or improved
2. Check for new linting errors
3. Validate documentation is in sync

### On-Stop (Final Gate)

Before completing:
1. Run full test suite
2. Verify no regressions
3. Check all quality thresholds met

## Commands

| Command | Purpose |
|---------|---------|
| `/quality-check` | Run full quality gate |
| `/add-tests` | Generate missing tests |
| `/sync-docs` | Update documentation |

## Assets

| Asset | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `assets/claude-quality-hooks.md` | Claude Code hook configurations |
| `assets/cursor-quality-integration.md` | Cursor IDE integration guide |

## References

| Reference | Description |
|-----------|-------------|

## Test Result Caching

Always save test output to `.tmp/` instead of running tests multiple times:

```bash
# Run once and save
pnpm test 2>&1 | tee .tmp/pnpm-test-latest.txt
# Then grep from file (don't run tests again!)
grep "FAIL" .tmp/pnpm-test-latest.txt
tail -20 .tmp/pnpm-test-latest.txt
```

Overview

This skill orchestrates comprehensive quality checks at key lifecycle points (pre-edit, post-edit, on-stop) to keep the Bitso Java API Wrapper codebase consistent and reliable. It coordinates tests, documentation validation, style enforcement, and security reviews so changes meet project quality thresholds before completion. Use it when making significant JavaScript changes or before closing a task.

How this skill works

The skill runs a sequence of sub-checks: test coverage validation, lint/style checks, documentation sync, and security scanning. It captures a pre-edit baseline, validates changes post-edit, and executes a final gate on-stop, optionally caching test outputs to avoid redundant runs. Commands let you trigger a full gate, add missing tests, or sync docs.

When to use it

  • Before starting significant code changes to capture baseline metrics
  • After completing edits to validate coverage, linting, and docs
  • Before marking a task complete as a final quality gate
  • When asked to run an on-demand quality check or quality gate
  • When integrating IDE hooks to automate checks in your workflow

Best practices

  • Run pre-edit to record current test coverage and lint state before changes
  • Save test output to a temporary file and grep results instead of rerunning tests
  • Fail fast on new lint or security findings and fix them before merging
  • Keep documentation synchronized with code changes via the sync-docs command
  • Use IDE hooks to automate pre/post checks for consistent developer experience

Example use cases

  • Capture baseline coverage before refactoring core API client logic
  • Validate that new features maintain or improve test coverage after implementation
  • Run full gate before closing an issue or completing a pull request
  • Automatically block task completion if security review finds a vulnerability
  • Generate missing tests for uncovered logic paths with the add-tests command

FAQ

How do I avoid running slow test suites repeatedly?

Cache the latest test output to a temp file (e.g., .tmp/pnpm-test-latest.txt) and grep or tail that file for failures instead of re-running the suite.

Which checks run at each lifecycle hook?

Pre-edit records baseline metrics (coverage, lint, docs). Post-edit validates changes (coverage, lint, docs). On-stop runs the full test suite, verifies no regressions, and ensures all thresholds are met.

How can I integrate these checks into my IDE?

Use the provided IDE hook configurations to bind pre-edit, post-edit, and on-stop checks into your AI IDE or editor workflow for automatic enforcement.
