# Navigator Initialization Skill
## Purpose
Creates the Navigator documentation structure (`.agent/`) in a new project, copies templates, and sets up initial configuration.

## What This Skill Does
1. **Checks if already initialized**: Prevents overwriting existing structure
2. **Creates `.agent/` directory structure**:

## Execution Steps
### 1. Check if Already Initialized

### 2. Detect Project Information
Read `package.json`, `pyproject.toml`, `go.mod`, `Cargo.toml`, or similar to extract:
- Project name
- Tech stack
- Dependencies
**Fallback**: Use current directory name if no config found.
### 3. Create Directory Structure
Use Write tool to create:

### 4. Copy Templates
Copy from plugin's `templates/` directory to `.agent/`:
**DEVELOPMENT-README.md**:
- Replace `${PROJECT_NAME}` with detected project name
- Replace `${TECH_STACK}` with detected stack
- Replace `${DATE}` with current date

Copy all Grafana dashboard files to enable metrics visualization:

### 5. Update Project CLAUDE.md
If `CLAUDE.md` exists:
- Append Navigator-specific sections
- Keep existing project customizations
If `CLAUDE.md` doesn't exist:
- Copy `templates/CLAUDE.md` to project root
- Customize with project info
### 6. Setup Token Monitoring Hook
Create `.claude/settings.json` for token budget monitoring:

**What this does**:
- Monitors context usage after each tool call
- Warns at 70% usage, critical alert at 85%
- Suggests `/nav:compact` when approaching limits

## Error Handling
**If `.agent/` exists**:

- This skill replaces the deleted `/nav:init` command from v2.x
- Templates are copied from plugin installation directory
- Project info detection is best-effort (falls back to directory name)
- Safe to run multiple times (won't overwrite existing structure)
This skill initializes Navigator documentation and tooling scaffolding in a project by creating a .agent/ documentation structure, adding configuration, and wiring lightweight hooks for Claude Code. It auto-detects project information, customizes templates, and preserves existing installations to avoid accidental overwrites. The result is a ready-to-use Navigator workspace with optional Grafana metrics and token-monitoring hooks.
On invocation it first checks for an existing .agent/ folder and aborts if present. It then detects project metadata from common files (package.json, pyproject.toml, go.mod, Cargo.toml, etc.) or falls back to the current directory name. The skill creates the .agent/ and .claude/ directories, copies and customizes templates (DEVELOPMENT-README.md, .nav-config.json, Grafana files), adds .gitignore entries, and writes a token-monitoring hook to .claude/settings.json. It reports success and next steps or errors if templates or permissions are missing.
What happens if .agent/ already exists?
The skill will not overwrite existing .agent/ and will exit with a message explaining how to start Navigator sessions.
Where are templates copied from?
Templates are copied from the installed plugin templates directory; if templates are missing the skill reports an error and suggests reinstalling the plugin.
Does this enable runtime metrics automatically?
Grafana files are copied but you must run the provided docker-compose in .agent/grafana to launch Prometheus and Grafana; copying alone does not run the stack.
