The DolphinDB MCP server integrates DolphinDB's data processing capabilities with the Model Context Protocol, allowing AI assistants like Claude to interact with your DolphinDB environment. This server enables seamless querying and analysis of data through natural language conversations.

Installation

Prerequisites

Before installing the DolphinDB MCP server, ensure you have:

  • Python installed on your system
  • Access to a DolphinDB server
  • uv package manager (strongly recommended)

Installing Required Packages

Install all necessary dependencies using uv:

uv pip install fastmcp dolphindb dotenv

Configuring DolphinDB Server Connection

  1. Create a configuration file by copying the example:
cp .env.example .env
  1. Open the .env file and update the following parameters with your DolphinDB server details:
    • Server address
    • Port
    • Username
    • Password
    • Other relevant connection parameters

Setting Up with Claude

Installing to Claude Desktop

After configuring your DolphinDB connection, install the MCP server to Claude Desktop:

fastmcp install demo.py

Using with Claude Desktop

Once installed, you can start using the MCP server through Claude Desktop. The integration allows you to:

  • Query your DolphinDB server using natural language
  • Analyze and visualize data from your DolphinDB server
  • Perform complex data operations by simply describing what you need

Extending Functionality

Adding More Tools

You can extend the MCP server's capabilities by adding custom tools that expose specific DolphinDB functionality to Claude. These tools can be specialized for particular types of data analysis, visualization, or other tasks specific to your needs.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter connection issues:

  • Verify your DolphinDB server is running
  • Check that the credentials in your .env file are correct
  • Ensure network connectivity between your machine and the DolphinDB server

For other issues, try restarting the MCP server and Claude Desktop.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "dolphindb" '{"command":"python","args":["-m","fastmcp.serve","dolphindb-mcp-server"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "dolphindb": {
            "command": "python",
            "args": [
                "-m",
                "fastmcp.serve",
                "dolphindb-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "dolphindb": {
            "command": "python",
            "args": [
                "-m",
                "fastmcp.serve",
                "dolphindb-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
