This MCP server provides filesystem capabilities to Claude Desktop, allowing it to read, write, and manipulate files on your system through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It enables Claude to interact with your files for more powerful and contextual assistance.

Prerequisites

  • Bun v1.2.5 or later

Installation

Clone the repository and install dependencies:

git clone https://github.com/yourusername/claude-desktop-mcp.git
cd claude-desktop-mcp
bun install

Configuration

To use the MCP server with Claude Desktop, you need to configure it in your Claude Desktop configuration file:

Setting up the configuration file

Create or edit your claude_desktop_config.json file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "notion": {
      "command": "~/.bun/bin/bun",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "<your path>/src/notion/index.ts",
        "your_notion_integration_key_here"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Note: If no base directory is provided, the current working directory will be used.

Available Tools

The server provides several filesystem operations that Claude can perform:

File Operations

  • list_files: Lists files matching a glob pattern
  • read_file: Reads the content of a file
  • write_file: Writes content to a file
  • edit_file: Edits an existing file with the provided content and shows diff
  • delete_file: Deletes a file

Security Features

The server implements path normalization and validation to ensure operations are restricted to the specified base directory, preventing directory traversal attacks. This means Claude can only access files within the allowed directory structure.

Usage Examples

Once configured, Claude can use these filesystem capabilities automatically when needed. For example, you can ask Claude to:

  • "List all JavaScript files in my project"
  • "Read the content of my README.md file"
  • "Create a new file called notes.txt with the following content..."
  • "Update my configuration file with these new settings"
  • "Delete the temporary files in this directory"

Claude will use the appropriate filesystem tool based on your request without you needing to specify the underlying commands.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "notion" '{"command":"~/.bun/bin/bun","args":["run","<your path>/src/notion/index.ts","your_notion_integration_key_here"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "notion": {
            "command": "~/.bun/bin/bun",
            "args": [
                "run",
                "<your path>/src/notion/index.ts",
                "your_notion_integration_key_here"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "notion": {
            "command": "~/.bun/bin/bun",
            "args": [
                "run",
                "<your path>/src/notion/index.ts",
                "your_notion_integration_key_here"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
