GeekNews MCP Server is a Model Context Protocol server that retrieves articles from GeekNews (news.hada.io). Built with Python and BeautifulSoup for web scraping, it features automatic data parsing and caching once a day to minimize server load while providing up-to-date content.

Features

Available Tools

  • get_articles tool: Retrieves articles from GeekNews

    • Specify article type (top, new, ask, show) and number of articles
    • Each response includes title, URL, points, author, time, comment count, and rank
    • Uses cached data to reduce server load
  • get_weekly_news tool: Fetches weekly news from GeekNews

    • Retrieve specific weekly news by ID or get the most recent weekly news
    • Provides title, number, ID, content, URL, and item list information
    • Each item includes title, URL, and rank information
    • Uses cached data to reduce server load

Caching System

  • Automatically parses and stores data in cache once a day
  • Uses cached data when valid instead of making new requests to GeekNews servers
  • Cache data remains valid for 24 hours before automatic renewal
  • Scheduler periodically checks cache validity and refreshes when needed

Installation

Using Smithery

The easiest way to install the GeekNews MCP Server is through Smithery:

  1. Visit geeknews-mcp-server on Smithery
  2. Add server information to your MCP configuration file:

[
        "-y",
        "@smithery/cli@latest",
        "run",
        "@the0807/geeknews-mcp-server",
        "--key",
        "your_smithery_key_here"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Local Installation

For local installation, follow these steps:

  1. Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/the0807/GeekNews-MCP-Server
cd GeekNews-MCP-Server
  1. Set up the environment using uv:
uv sync
  1. Activate the virtual environment:
uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate
  1. Test the server with MCP Inspector:
uv run mcp
mcp dev main.py

Access the URL displayed in the terminal (MCP Inspector) to test the server.

Usage

Once the server is running, you can interact with it using MCP-compatible clients. The server provides two main tools:

Using get_articles Tool

This tool retrieves articles from GeekNews based on specified parameters:

  • type: Article type (top, new, ask, show)
  • count: Number of articles to return (optional)

Example request:

  }
}

Using get_weekly_news Tool

This tool retrieves weekly news compilations:

  • id: Weekly news ID (optional - if not provided, returns the most recent weekly news)

Example request:
get_weekly_news
}
}

Or to get a specific weekly news compilation:

  }
}

Notes on Usage

  • The server automatically caches data in the .cache/geeknews-mcp folder in your home directory
  • Cache is refreshed every 24 hours to ensure data is up-to-date while minimizing requests to GeekNews
  • The tools are designed to work with any MCP-compatible client or LLM that supports the MCP protocol

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "geeknews-mcp-server" '
npx
-y","@smithery/cli@latest","run","@the0807/geeknews-mcp-server","--key","smithery에서 발급 받은 키"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

[
                "-y",
                "@smithery/cli@latest",
                "run",
                "@the0807/geeknews-mcp-server",
                "--key",
                "smithery에서 발급 받은 키"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

[
                "-y",
                "@smithery/cli@latest",
                "run",
                "@the0807/geeknews-mcp-server",
                "--key",
                "smithery에서 발급 받은 키"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
