The Redash MCP server enables seamless integration between Redash and AI assistants like Claude, allowing you to access and manage your Redash queries, dashboards, and visualizations through a Model Context Protocol interface.

Prerequisites

Before installing the Redash MCP server, ensure you have:

  • Node.js (v18 or later)
  • npm or yarn
  • Access to a Redash instance
  • Redash API key

Installation

Follow these steps to install and set up the Redash MCP server:

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://github.com/suthio/redash-mcp.git
    cd redash-mcp

  2. Install dependencies:

    npm install

  3. Create a .env file with your Redash configuration:

    REDASH_URL=https://your-redash-instance.com
    REDASH_API_KEY=your_api_key

  4. Build the project:

    npm run build

  5. Start the server:

    npm start

Configuration Options

The server requires the following environment variables:

Optional variables:

  • REDASH_TIMEOUT: Timeout for API requests in milliseconds (default: 30000)
  • REDASH_MAX_RESULTS: Maximum number of results to return (default: 1000)

Integration with Claude for Desktop

To use this MCP server with Claude for Desktop:

  1. Locate your Claude for Desktop configuration file:

    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  2. Add the following configuration (adjust as needed):

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "redash": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
             "-y",
             "@suthio/redash-mcp"
          ],
          "env": {
            "REDASH_API_KEY": "your-api-key",
            "REDASH_URL": "https://your-redash-instance.com"
          }
        }
      }
    }

Available Tools

Query Management

  • List queries: View all available queries in your Redash instance
  • Get query details: Retrieve information about a specific query
  • Create queries: Create new queries in Redash
  • Update queries: Modify existing queries
  • Archive queries: Soft-delete queries you no longer need
  • List data sources: View available data sources for query creation

Query Execution

  • Execute query: Run a saved query and return results
  • Execute ad-hoc query: Run a query without saving it to Redash

Dashboard Management

  • List dashboards: View all available dashboards
  • Get dashboard details: Retrieve information about dashboards and their visualizations
  • Get visualization details: Access specific visualization information

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "redash" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","@suthio/redash-mcp"],"env":{"REDASH_API_KEY":"your-api-key","REDASH_URL":"https://your-redash-instance.com"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "redash": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@suthio/redash-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "REDASH_API_KEY": "your-api-key",
                "REDASH_URL": "https://your-redash-instance.com"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "redash": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@suthio/redash-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "REDASH_API_KEY": "your-api-key",
                "REDASH_URL": "https://your-redash-instance.com"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
