The Mureka Model Context Protocol (MCP) server enables interaction with powerful lyrics, song and background music generation APIs. This server allows MCP clients like Claude Desktop and OpenAI Agents to generate lyrics, songs, and instrumental music through a standardized protocol interface.

Installation and Setup with Claude Desktop

Prerequisites

  • An API key from Mureka
  • The uv Python package manager

Installation Steps

  1. Install the uv package manager:

    curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

  2. Configure Claude Desktop:

    • Open Claude Desktop
    • Navigate to Claude > Settings > Developer > Edit Config
    • In the claude_desktop_config.json file, add the following configuration:
    {
        "mcpServers": {
            "Mureka": {
                "command": "uvx",
                "args": [
                    "mureka-mcp"
                ],
                "env": {
                    "MUREKA_API_KEY": "<insert-your-api-key-here>",
                    "MUREKA_API_URL": "https://api.mureka.ai",
                    "TIME_OUT_SECONDS":"300"
                }
            }
        }
    }

  3. Restart the Claude app - you should see 4 MCP tools available in the window, indicating successful loading

Configuration Options

Timeout Settings

You can adjust the waiting period for song or BGM generation by setting the TIME_OUT_SECONDS environment variable in your configuration file (default is 60 seconds).

Using the Mureka MCP Server

Example Prompts

You can request various music-related content from Claude using natural language. Here are some example prompts:

  • "Please create a song for my daughter Jessica to wish her a happy birthday and play it"
  • "Please generate lyrics about Christmas"
  • "Please generate a song based on the lyrics just now"
  • "Please generate background music suitable for playing in the coffee shop"

Note: Using these tools requires Mureka credits.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, check the logs located at:

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\logs\mcp-server-Mureka.log
  • macOS: ~/Library/Logs/Claude/mcp-server-Mureka.log

These logs can provide information about any errors that might occur during operation.

How to add this MCP server to Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "cursor-rules-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "cursor-rules-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
