Memex is a powerful tool for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) that helps you analyze web content and build a knowledge base from it. It processes web pages, extracts valuable information, and stores it as Markdown files that you can reference when asking questions to Claude or other AI assistants.
Before installing Memex, you'll need API keys for the following services:
While any Markdown viewer will work with the knowledge base Memex creates, Obsidian is recommended for the best experience.
Install the Memex package using pip:
pip install mcp-memex
Add Memex to your Claude Desktop configuration by updating your claude_desktop_config.json
file with the following settings:
{
"mcpServers": {
"memex": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"PATH_TO_LOCAL_MEMEX_REPO",
"run",
"mcp-memex",
"--index",
"PATH_TO_MEMEX_INDEX",
"--workspace",
"PATH_TO_OBSIDIAN_VAULT"
],
"env": {
"ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY",
"FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY",
"VOYAGE_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY"
}
}
}
}
Make sure to replace the placeholder values:
PATH_TO_LOCAL_MEMEX_REPO
: The path to your local Memex repositoryPATH_TO_MEMEX_INDEX
: Where you want Memex to store its indexPATH_TO_OBSIDIAN_VAULT
: The path to your Obsidian vaultYOUR-API-KEY
values with your actual API keysTo analyze web content with Memex, simply ask Claude a question and include one or more URLs in quotation marks:
What is the capital of France? "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France"
Memex will:
After Memex has analyzed web content, you can ask questions about that content without providing the URL again:
What is the capital of France?
Claude will use the information stored in your Memex knowledge base to provide an answer.
Open your Obsidian vault to browse through the Markdown files Memex has created. The knowledge base is organized in a way that makes it easy to navigate and search for specific information.
To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:
claude mcp add-json "memex" '{"command":"uv","args":["--directory","PATH_TO_LOCAL_MEMEX_REPO","run","mcp-memex","--index","PATH_TO_MEMEX_INDEX","--workspace","PATH_TO_OBSIDIAN_VAULT"],"env":{"ANTHROPIC_API_KEY":"YOUR-API-KEY","FIRECRAWL_API_KEY":"YOUR-API-KEY","VOYAGE_API_KEY":"YOUR-API-KEY"}}'
See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.
There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file so that it is available in all of your projects.
If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json
file.
To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".
When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file will be opened and you can add your server like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"memex": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"PATH_TO_LOCAL_MEMEX_REPO",
"run",
"mcp-memex",
"--index",
"PATH_TO_MEMEX_INDEX",
"--workspace",
"PATH_TO_OBSIDIAN_VAULT"
],
"env": {
"ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY",
"FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY",
"VOYAGE_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY"
}
}
}
}
To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json
file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.
Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.
The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.
You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:
1. Find your configuration file:
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
2. Add this to your configuration file:
{
"mcpServers": {
"memex": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"PATH_TO_LOCAL_MEMEX_REPO",
"run",
"mcp-memex",
"--index",
"PATH_TO_MEMEX_INDEX",
"--workspace",
"PATH_TO_OBSIDIAN_VAULT"
],
"env": {
"ANTHROPIC_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY",
"FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY",
"VOYAGE_API_KEY": "YOUR-API-KEY"
}
}
}
}
3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
