This MCP server enables seamless interaction between Large Language Models (LLMs) and Notion by mirroring the entire Notion API SDK as a collection of tools. It allows operations such as reading, creating, updating, and deleting Notion pages through natural language instructions.

Setup Requirements

Before using the Notion MCP server, you must create a Notion integration and grant it proper access permissions:

  1. Visit the Notion Integration Getting Started guide
  2. Create a new integration in your Notion workspace
  3. Copy your integration token for later use
  4. Share the appropriate Notion pages/databases with your integration

Installation and Configuration

Setting Up with Cursor

To integrate the Notion MCP server with Cursor:

  1. Open Cursor Settings
  2. Navigate to Features and scroll to the "MCP Servers" section
  3. Click on Add new MCP server
  4. Configure the server with:
    • Name: Choose any descriptive name
    • Type: Select "command"
    • Command: Enter the following (replace with your actual token):
npx -y @orbit-logistics/notion-mcp-server -t <notion_integration_token>

Setting Up with Claude Desktop

For Claude Desktop, you'll need to modify the configuration file:

  1. Locate or create your claude_desktop_config.json file
  2. Add the following entry (replace with your actual token):
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "notion": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@orbit-logistics/notion-mcp-server",
        "-t",
        "<notion_integration_token>"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Using the Notion MCP Server

Once configured, the Notion MCP server enables your LLM to:

  • Read content from Notion pages and databases
  • Create new pages and databases
  • Update existing content
  • Delete pages when needed
  • Perform any operation supported by the official Notion API

Simply instruct your LLM (in Cursor or Claude Desktop) to perform tasks related to Notion, and it will utilize the appropriate tools provided by the MCP server to interact with your Notion workspace.

The server transparently handles the communication between your LLM and Notion, allowing for natural language instructions to translate into API operations.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "notion" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","@orbit-logistics/notion-mcp-server","-t","<notion_integration_token>"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "notion": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@orbit-logistics/notion-mcp-server",
                "-t",
                "<notion_integration_token>"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "notion": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@orbit-logistics/notion-mcp-server",
                "-t",
                "<notion_integration_token>"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
