This MCP server allows you to connect Claude Desktop with Drupal, enabling Claude to interact with your Drupal resources, tools, and prompts through the Model Context Protocol.

Installation

Prerequisites

Before installing the MCP server for Drupal, ensure you have:

  • Claude Desktop installed
  • Bun JavaScript runtime

Install Dependencies

First, install the required dependencies:

bun install

Build the Server

Build the server using:

bun run build

Configure Claude Desktop

To connect the MCP server with Claude Desktop, you need to add server configuration to Claude's config file:

MacOS:

  • Location: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Windows:

  • Location: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Add the following configuration to the file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "mcp-server-drupal": {
      "command": "__BINARY_PATH__",
      "args": ["--drupalBaseUrl", "__DRUPAL_BASE_URL__"],
      "env": {}
    }
  }
}

Make sure to replace:

  • __BINARY_PATH__ with the actual path to the built MCP server binary
  • __DRUPAL_BASE_URL__ with the URL of your Drupal installation

Usage

Available Resources

When connected to your Drupal site, this MCP server automatically makes all resources defined by the Drupal API available to Claude. These are loaded during the initialization phase.

Available Tools

All tools defined by the Drupal API are automatically made available to Claude through this MCP server. These tools allow Claude to perform actions within your Drupal environment.

Available Prompts

Claude can access all prompts defined by the Drupal API through this MCP server, allowing for specialized interactions with your Drupal site.

Troubleshooting

Using the MCP Inspector

Since MCP servers communicate over stdio, debugging can be challenging. The MCP Inspector tool can help troubleshoot connection issues:

bun run inspector

This command will provide a URL to access debugging tools in your browser, where you can monitor the communication between Claude and your Drupal site.

Development Mode

For development with automatic rebuilding when files change:

bun run dev

This is useful when customizing the server's functionality.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "mcp-server-drupal" '{"command":"__BINARY_PATH__","args":["--drupalBaseUrl","__DRUPAL_BASE_URL__"],"env":[]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-server-drupal": {
            "command": "__BINARY_PATH__",
            "args": [
                "--drupalBaseUrl",
                "__DRUPAL_BASE_URL__"
            ],
            "env": []
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-server-drupal": {
            "command": "__BINARY_PATH__",
            "args": [
                "--drupalBaseUrl",
                "__DRUPAL_BASE_URL__"
            ],
            "env": []
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
