Netlify MCP Server follows the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable code agents to use the Netlify API and CLI, allowing them to create new projects, build, deploy, and manage your Netlify resources using natural language prompts. It acts as a bridge between AI agents and Netlify's services, providing seamless integration for automation tasks.

Getting Started

Prerequisites

Before using the Netlify MCP Server, ensure you have:

  • Node.js 22 or higher (check with node --version)
  • A Netlify account
  • An MCP client (such as Windsurf, Cursor, Claude, Copilot, etc.)

For the best experience, it's recommended to install the Netlify CLI globally:

npm install -g netlify-cli

Installation

You can configure the Netlify MCP Server in your preferred MCP client using the following configuration:

Configuration for MCP Config Files

Add this to your MCP configuration file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "netlify": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@netlify/mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Capabilities

With the Netlify MCP Server, your AI agents can:

  • Create, manage, and deploy Netlify projects
  • Modify access controls for enhanced project security
  • Install or uninstall Netlify extensions
  • Fetch user and team information
  • Enable and manage form submissions
  • Create and manage environment variables and secrets
  • And more...

Troubleshooting

Node Version Issues

Ensure you're using Node.js 22 or higher. If you use nvm, you can run:

nvm install 22
nvm use 22

Authentication Issues

If you encounter authentication problems, you can temporarily add a Netlify Personal Access Token (PAT) to your MCP configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "netlify-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@netlify/mcp"],
      "env": {
        "NETLIFY_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN": "YOUR-PAT-VALUE"
      }
    }
  }
}

Important: Do not commit your PAT to your repository! Remove it from the config once the issue is resolved.

Generating a Personal Access Token

  1. In the Netlify dashboard, select your user icon
  2. Go to User settings > OAuth > New access token
  3. Copy your token and add it temporarily to your MCP config as shown above
  4. Restart or refresh your MCP client

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "netlify" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","@netlify/mcp"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "netlify": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@netlify/mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "netlify": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@netlify/mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
