This MCP server extension enhances the Slack MCP Server by adding custom functionality that allows Claude to interact with Slack workspaces more effectively. It builds upon the original server while introducing additional tools for improved message searching and workspace interaction.
To set up the Slack MCP Server extension, follow the setup instructions from the original Slack MCP Server documentation at https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/main/src/slack.
This tool allows you to search for messages across Slack channels with the option to exclude direct messages from search results.
query
(string): The search query to find relevant messagescount
(number): The number of search results to return (default: 5)excludeDMsFromSearch
(boolean): When set to true, the tool automatically excludes direct messages from search results by adding -in:@
to your query (default: false)To perform a basic search for messages containing specific keywords:
{
"query": "project deadline",
"count": 3
}
If you want to search only in public and private channels but not direct messages:
{
"query": "quarterly report",
"count": 5,
"excludeDMsFromSearch": true
}
You can use Slack's search operators in your query for more targeted results:
{
"query": "from:@username has:reaction after:2023-01-01",
"count": 10
}
For all other available tools and functionality, refer to the original Slack MCP Server documentation at https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/main/src/slack.
To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:
claude mcp add-json "slack" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","mcp-servers-slack-extension"]}'
See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.
There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file so that it is available in all of your projects.
If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json
file.
To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".
When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file will be opened and you can add your server like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"slack": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"mcp-servers-slack-extension"
]
}
}
}
To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json
file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.
Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.
The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.
You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
