This MCP server efficiently serves context to Claude Desktop about Julia documentation and source code, allowing you to quickly access information about Julia packages, modules, types, functions, and methods without leaving your Claude interface.

Features

  • Get documentation for Julia packages, modules, types, functions, and methods
  • View source code for Julia functions, types, and methods
  • Built-in caching with 5-minute TTL
  • Proper error handling for Julia-specific errors

Requirements

  • Node.js 16 or higher
  • Julia 1.9 or higher installed and accessible in PATH
  • Claude Desktop

Installation

To set up the Julia Documentation MCP server, you need to add it to your Claude Desktop configuration file. The configuration file is located at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.

Add the following to your configuration file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "juliadoc": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@jonathanfischer97/server-juliadoc"
      ],
      "env": {
        "JULIA_PROJECT": "/path/to/your/julia/project"
      }
    }
  }
}

Configuration Options

The server will use:

  • Your specified Julia project if JULIA_PROJECT is set in the config
  • The default global Julia environment if no project is specified
  • Your system's default Julia installation (must be accessible in PATH)

Using the Server

The Julia Documentation MCP server provides two main tools:

Getting Documentation

Use the get-doc tool to retrieve documentation for Julia packages, modules, types, functions, or methods.

  • Parameter: path (string) - Path to Julia object

Examples:

  • To get documentation for the sort function in the Base module: Base.sort
  • To get documentation for the AbstractArray type: AbstractArray

Viewing Source Code

Use the get-source tool to view the source code for Julia functions, types, or methods.

  • Parameter: path (string) - Path to Julia object

Examples:

  • To see the source code for the sort function in the Base module: Base.sort
  • To see the source code for the AbstractArray type: AbstractArray

Tips for Effective Use

  • For more specific documentation, provide full paths to the objects you're interested in
  • The server uses caching with a 5-minute TTL to improve performance
  • You can access documentation for both core Julia functionality and any installed packages
  • Ensure your Julia PATH is correctly set up for the server to find your Julia installation

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "juliadoc" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","@jonathanfischer97/server-juliadoc"],"env":{"JULIA_PROJECT":"/path/to/your/julia/project"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "juliadoc": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@jonathanfischer97/server-juliadoc"
            ],
            "env": {
                "JULIA_PROJECT": "/path/to/your/julia/project"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "juliadoc": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@jonathanfischer97/server-juliadoc"
            ],
            "env": {
                "JULIA_PROJECT": "/path/to/your/julia/project"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
