The Cursor MCP Installer helps you easily set up and configure Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers within your Cursor IDE. It streamlines the process of adding new MCP servers that extend Claude's capabilities in Cursor.

Installation Options

Using npx (No Installation Required)

Add this to your ~/.cursor/mcp.json file (create it if it doesn't exist):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "MCP Installer": {
      "command": "npx",
      "type": "stdio",
      "args": [
        "[email protected]",
        "index.mjs"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Using npm (Global Installation)

Install the package globally:

npm install -g [email protected]

Then add to your ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "MCP Installer": {
      "command": "cursor-mcp-installer-free",
      "type": "stdio",
      "args": [
        "index.mjs"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Configuration File Location

The Cursor MCP configuration file is located at:

  • macOS/Linux: ~/.cursor/mcp.json
  • Windows: %USERPROFILE%\.cursor\mcp.json

Create this file if it doesn't exist.

Getting Started

Step 1: Configure MCP Installer

Follow one of the installation methods above to add the MCP Installer to your Cursor configuration.

Step 2: Restart Cursor

Close and reopen Cursor to load the new MCP server configuration.

Step 3: Install MCP Servers Using Claude

Once the MCP Installer is running, you can ask Claude to install servers for you. Try prompts like:

Install the web search MCP server

or

Install the MCP server for OpenAPI schema exploration with my-schema.yaml

Usage Examples

Installing npm Packages as MCP Servers

To install an MCP server from npm:

Install the MCP server named mcp-server-fetch

Installing with Arguments

To install a server with specific arguments:

Install the @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem package as an MCP server. Use ['/home/user/documents'] for the arguments

Installing Local MCP Servers

To install a server from a local directory:

Install the MCP server at /path/to/my-mcp-server

Adding Custom Configurations

The MCP Installer provides three main tools:

  • install_repo_mcp_server: Install MCP servers from npm packages or repositories
  • install_local_mcp_server: Install MCP servers from local directories
  • add_to_cursor_config: Add custom MCP server configurations

Prerequisites

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with path handling, ensure you're using v0.1.3 or later, which includes improved path resolution for:

  • Paths with spaces and special characters
  • Schema file detection (.yaml, .yml, .json, .openapi)
  • Better error reporting for path-related issues

After making changes to your MCP configuration, always restart Cursor to apply them.

How to add this MCP server to Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "cursor-rules-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "cursor-rules-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
