The MCP Documentation Server is a smart AI-powered tool that provides code improvement assistance and documentation management through Claude Desktop integration. It maintains a knowledge base while analyzing and improving code quality across multiple frameworks.

Installation

Prerequisites

  • Node.js installed on your system
  • A Brave API key for search functionality
  • Claude Desktop application

Installing the MCP Server

Install the package globally using npm:

npm install -g mcp-documentation-server

Configuration

Create or update your Claude Desktop configuration file (config.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "documentation": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-documentation-server"],
      "env": {
        "BRAVE_API_KEY": "<YOUR_BRAVE_API_KEY>"
      }
    }
  }
}

Replace <YOUR_BRAVE_API_KEY> with your actual Brave API key.

Environment Configuration

For more advanced setups, you can create a .env file with the following settings:

PORT=3000
UPDATE_INTERVAL=3600000
CACHE_DURATION=86400000
BRAVE_API_KEY=your_brave_api_key

Using MCP Server with Claude Desktop

Basic Commands

The MCP Server allows you to interact with Claude Desktop using natural language queries:

Claude, search documentation for Next.js App Router
Claude, analyze this Python code and suggest improvements...
Claude, find best practices for React hooks

Advanced Usage

You can make more specific queries to get targeted results:

Claude, search for documentation about async/await in Python 3.9
Claude, analyze this code for security issues and suggest fixes...

Supported Frameworks

The MCP Documentation Server provides intelligent assistance for multiple frameworks:

  • React.js
  • Next.js (with App Router)
  • Python
  • Vue.js
  • Angular
  • Node.js

Working with Code Analysis

When requesting code analysis, simply paste your code after your query:

Claude, analyze this React component for performance issues:

function MyComponent() {
  // Your code here
}

The AI will analyze the code and provide specific suggestions for improvements.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with the MCP Server:

  • Verify your Brave API key is correctly configured
  • Ensure Claude Desktop is properly set up
  • Check your network connection
  • Review that your Node.js installation is up to date

For persistent issues, consult the full documentation or contact support.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "documentation" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","mcp-documentation-server"],"env":{"BRAVE_API_KEY":"<YOUR_BRAVE_API_KEY>"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "documentation": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-documentation-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "BRAVE_API_KEY": "<YOUR_BRAVE_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "documentation": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-documentation-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "BRAVE_API_KEY": "<YOUR_BRAVE_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
