The MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for Memos enables AI assistants to search through and create memos in your Memos instance. This implementation allows Claude and other MCP-compatible assistants to interact with your Memos data through simple commands.

Installation

Prerequisites

  • A running Memos instance
  • An API key for your Memos instance

Installing via Smithery

You can quickly install the MCP server for Memos using Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @LeslieLeung/mcp-server-memos --client claude

Configuration

After installation, you'll need to configure the server with your Memos credentials. Update your configuration with these environment variables:

{
    "mcpServers": [
        "memos": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "memos-mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "MEMOS_URL": "https://memos.example.com",
                "MEMOS_API_KEY": "your_api_key",
                "DEFAULT_TAG": "#mcp"
            }
        }
    ]
}

Make sure to replace:

  • https://memos.example.com with your actual Memos instance URL
  • your_api_key with your Memos API key
  • Optionally customize the DEFAULT_TAG that will be applied to memos created through this server

Available Tools

The MCP server provides two main tools:

Search Memos

Use the search_memos tool to find existing memos that match specific keywords:

search_memos <keyword>

This will return relevant memos containing the specified keyword.

Create Memo

Use the create_memo tool to create a new memo in your Memos instance:

create_memo <content>

The new memo will be created with the content you provide and automatically tagged with the DEFAULT_TAG specified in your configuration.

Usage Example

When using Claude or another MCP-compatible assistant, you can ask it to perform tasks like:

  • "Find all my memos about project planning"
  • "Create a new memo with my shopping list"
  • "Search for memos containing information about meetings"

The assistant will use the appropriate MCP tool to complete your request by communicating with your Memos instance.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "memos" '{"command":"uvx","args":["memos-mcp-server"],"env":{"MEMOS_URL":"https://memos.example.com","MEMOS_API_KEY":"your_api_key","DEFAULT_TAG":"#mcp"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "memos": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "memos-mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "MEMOS_URL": "https://memos.example.com",
                "MEMOS_API_KEY": "your_api_key",
                "DEFAULT_TAG": "#mcp"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "memos": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "memos-mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "MEMOS_URL": "https://memos.example.com",
                "MEMOS_API_KEY": "your_api_key",
                "DEFAULT_TAG": "#mcp"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
