This GraphQL MCP server enables language models to interact with GraphQL APIs by providing schema introspection and query execution capabilities. It acts as a bridge that allows AI models to discover and use GraphQL APIs dynamically.

Installation

Installing via Smithery

For automatic installation with Claude Desktop via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install mcp-graphql --client claude

Installing Manually

To install manually for Claude, add this configuration:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-graphql": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": ["mcp-graphql", "--endpoint", "http://localhost:3000/graphql"]
        }
    }
}

Usage

Command Line Arguments

The server accepts several configuration options:

Argument Description Default
--endpoint GraphQL endpoint URL http://localhost:4000/graphql
--headers JSON string containing headers for requests {}
--enable-mutations Enable mutation operations (disabled by default) false
--name Name of the MCP server mcp-graphql
--schema Path to a local GraphQL schema file (optional) -

Basic Examples

# Basic usage with a local GraphQL server
npx mcp-graphql --endpoint http://localhost:3000/graphql

# Using with custom headers
npx mcp-graphql --endpoint https://api.example.com/graphql --headers '{"Authorization":"Bearer token123"}'

# Enable mutation operations
npx mcp-graphql --endpoint http://localhost:3000/graphql --enable-mutations

# Using a local schema file instead of introspection
npx mcp-graphql --endpoint http://localhost:3000/graphql --schema ./schema.graphql

Available Tools

introspect-schema

This tool retrieves the GraphQL schema from either a local schema file or through an introspection query. Use this first if you don't have access to the schema as a resource.

query-graphql

Execute GraphQL queries against the endpoint. Mutations are disabled by default as a security measure unless you explicitly enable them with the --enable-mutations flag.

Resources

graphql-schema

The server exposes the GraphQL schema as a resource that clients can access. This is derived either from the local schema file you provide or based on the results of an introspection query.

Security Considerations

By default, mutations are disabled to prevent an LLM from modifying your database or service data. Before enabling mutations in production environments, carefully consider the security implications and ensure proper access controls are in place.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "mcp-graphql" '{"command":"npx","args":["mcp-graphql","--endpoint","http://localhost:3000/graphql"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-graphql": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-graphql",
                "--endpoint",
                "http://localhost:3000/graphql"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-graphql": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-graphql",
                "--endpoint",
                "http://localhost:3000/graphql"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
