This MCP server plays notification sounds when AI coding assistants (like Windsurf or Cursor) require user attention, such as when coding is complete or user approval is needed.

Setup and Installation

Prerequisites

  • Node.js (v18 or higher)
  • Yarn

Installation Steps

# Clone the repository
git clone <repository-url>
cd sound-notification-mcp

# Install dependencies
yarn install

# Build
yarn build

Configuration

Cursor Configuration

Add the configuration to /.cursor/mcp.json for project-specific settings. For global settings, use the Cursor settings icon.

Windsurf Configuration

Add configuration to mcp_config.json. The content can be identical to what's used in /.cursor/mcp.json.

For Windsurf, it's recommended to:

  • Add notification instructions to your global_rules.md file
  • Add notification settings to your memories

Customizing the Notification Sound

Edit the sound file path in src/index.ts:

const SYSTEM_SOUND_PATH = '/System/Library/Sounds/Glass.aiff'; // macOS default sound

Available macOS system sounds include:

  • Bottle.aiff
  • Frog.aiff
  • Funk.aiff
  • Glass.aiff
  • Hero.aiff
  • Morse.aiff
  • Ping.aiff
  • Pop.aiff
  • Purr.aiff
  • Sosumi.aiff
  • Submarine.aiff
  • Tink.aiff

Troubleshooting

No Sound Playing

  1. Check that system volume is properly set
  2. Verify the specified sound file exists
  3. Check terminal output for error messages

Server Won't Start

  1. Verify Node.js and Yarn installation
  2. Check dependencies with yarn install
  3. Look for build errors with yarn build

Important Notes

  • Currently only supports macOS
  • When adding settings, always add corresponding entries to the rules
  • Sound notifications may sometimes play at unexpected times due to LLM judgment
  • For Cursor, sounds may not always play before command execution approval
  • Windsurf may sometimes play notification sounds multiple times

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "sound-notification" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","sound-notification-mcp"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "sound-notification": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "sound-notification-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "sound-notification": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "sound-notification-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
