The MCP Pocket server connects Claude Desktop (or any MCP client) to your Pocket account, allowing you to fetch and manage your saved articles directly through the Claude interface.

Installation Requirements

Before setting up MCP Pocket, ensure you have:

  • Node.js installed (install with brew install node on macOS)
  • Claude Desktop app installed (download from https://claude.ai/desktop)
  • Pocket API credentials (consumer key and access token)

Setting Up MCP Pocket

Configure Claude Desktop

You need to modify the Claude Desktop configuration file to connect the MCP Pocket server:

  1. Locate your Claude Desktop config file at: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

    You can also find this through the Claude Desktop app:

    • Open Claude Desktop
    • Click "Claude" in the Mac menu bar
    • Click "Settings"
    • Click "Developer"
  2. If the file doesn't exist, create an empty file at that location.

  3. Add the following configuration to the file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pocket": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@kazuph/mcp-pocket"],
      "env": {
        "POCKET_CONSUMER_KEY": "your-pocket-consumer-key",
        "POCKET_ACCESS_TOKEN": "your-pocket-access-token"
      }
    }
  }
}

Obtaining Pocket API Credentials

To get your Pocket API credentials:

  1. Create a new app in the Pocket Developer Portal
  2. Complete the authentication process to obtain your Consumer Key and Access Token
  3. Replace the placeholder values in the configuration file with your actual credentials

Using MCP Pocket

Once configured, you'll have access to these commands in Claude Desktop:

Fetch Saved Articles

Use the pocket_get_articles command to retrieve your saved articles from Pocket. This will return a list of articles including their titles, URLs, and excerpts.

Mark Articles as Read

Use the pocket_mark_as_read command to archive a specific article in your Pocket account. You'll need to provide the item ID of the article you want to mark as read.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues:

  • Verify your Pocket API credentials are correct
  • Ensure Node.js is properly installed
  • Check that the Claude Desktop configuration file is correctly formatted
  • Restart Claude Desktop after making configuration changes

How to add this MCP server to Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "cursor-rules-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "cursor-rules-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
