This MCP server connects GitHub code repositories to Claude.ai, allowing you to directly ask questions about GitHub repositories and receive informed responses. The server uses Pera1 service to extract code from repositories and provide better context to Claude.

Installation

To install the GitHub MCP server, you need to add it to your Claude desktop configuration file. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate or create your MCP config file at:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

  2. Add the following configuration to the file:

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "github": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "@kazuph/mcp-github-pera1"]
        }
      }
    }

Usage

Once installed, you can use the GitHub MCP server to query information about GitHub repositories directly within Claude.

Basic Repository Analysis

Ask Claude about any GitHub repository:

Tell me about the implementation of GitHub repository https://github.com/username/repository

Query Parameters

The MCP server supports several parameters to customize your queries:

  • dir: Filter files by directory paths (comma-separated)
  • ext: Filter files by extensions (comma-separated)
  • mode: Change the display mode
  • branch: Specify which branch to fetch from
  • file: Retrieve a specific file

Usage Examples

Examining Specific Directories

To focus on a specific directory:

Explain the components in https://github.com/username/repository?dir=src/components

Retrieving a Specific File

To examine a particular file:

Show me the Button component from https://github.com/username/repository?file=src/components/Button.tsx

Viewing Directory Structure

To see only the directory structure with README files:

Show me the structure of https://github.com/username/repository?mode=tree

Analyzing Different Branches

To analyze a specific branch:

Analyze the develop branch of https://github.com/username/repository?branch=develop

Advanced Filtering

You can combine parameters for more specific queries. For example, to review JavaScript files in a specific directory:

Show me the JavaScript files in https://github.com/username/repository?dir=src&ext=js

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "github" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","@kazuph/mcp-github-pera1"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "github": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@kazuph/mcp-github-pera1"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "github": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@kazuph/mcp-github-pera1"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
