This Node.js server implements the Model Context Protocol (MCP), creating a bridge between your application, Claude AI, and the IssueBadge API. It allows you to send badges with optional AI-generated messages through a simple HTTP interface.

Setup and Installation

Setting up the MCP server is straightforward:

npm install
npm start

Once running, the server will be ready to accept requests.

Using the MCP Server

The server exposes an endpoint that accepts POST requests to send badges with optional Claude-generated messages.

Sending a Badge

To send a badge, make a POST request to the /sendBadge endpoint with the following JSON payload:

{
  "name": "John Doe",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "badge_id": "W238GD8PK",
  "api_key": "your_issuebadge_api_key",
  "claude_message": "Claude's custom message here"
}

Request Parameters

  • name: Recipient's name
  • email: Recipient's email address
  • badge_id: The ID of the badge to be issued
  • api_key: Your IssueBadge API key
  • claude_message (optional): Custom message generated by Claude

Response Format

The server responds with a JSON object containing:

{
  "success": true,
  "message": "Badge sent successfully",
  "claude_output": "...",
  "response": { ... }
}

Integration with Claude AI

To include AI-generated messages with your badges:

  1. Call Claude's API separately from your application
  2. Include the response text in the claude_message field of your request

Security Considerations

When using this server, keep in mind:

  • You are responsible for securely managing your API keys
  • Consider using environment variables for storing sensitive information
  • Implement proper authentication if deploying in a production environment

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "issuebadge" '{"command":"npx","args":["issuebadge-mcpserver"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "issuebadge": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "issuebadge-mcpserver"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "issuebadge": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "issuebadge-mcpserver"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
