The Inkeep MCP Server integrates with your documentation and product content to provide retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities through the Model Context Protocol. This server allows AI assistants to access and search your content through a standardized interface.

Installation Requirements

Before installing the MCP server, ensure you have:

  • An account on Inkeep to manage and provide the RAG functionality
  • uv Python project manager installed on your system

Installation Steps

Follow these steps to install the Inkeep MCP server:

git clone https://github.com/inkeep/mcp-server-python.git
cd mcp-server-python
uv venv
uv pip install -r pyproject.toml

Make note of the full absolute path to the project directory as you'll need it for configuration later.

Getting an API Key

To use the MCP server, you'll need an Inkeep API key:

  1. Log in to the Inkeep Dashboard
  2. Navigate to the Projects section and select your project
  3. Open the Integrations tab
  4. Click Create Integration and choose API from the options
  5. Enter a name for your new API integration
  6. Click on Create
  7. Save the generated API key for configuration

Configuring with Claude Desktop

The Inkeep MCP Server integrates with MCP clients like Claude Desktop. To add it to your setup:

  1. Follow the Claude Desktop setup guide
  2. Locate your claude_desktop_config.json file
  3. Add the Inkeep MCP server to the mcpServers section:
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "inkeep-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uv",
            "args": [
                "--directory",
                "<YOUR_INKEEP_MCP_SERVER_ABSOLUTE_PATH>",
                "run",
                "-m",
                "inkeep_mcp_server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "INKEEP_API_BASE_URL": "https://api.inkeep.com/v1",
                "INKEEP_API_KEY": "<YOUR_INKEEP_API_KEY>",
                "INKEEP_API_MODEL": "inkeep-rag",
                "INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_NAME": "search-product-content",
                "INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_DESCRIPTION": "Retrieves product documentation about Inkeep. The query should be framed as a conversational question about Inkeep."
            }
        }
    }
}

Configuration Notes

  • Replace <YOUR_INKEEP_MCP_SERVER_ABSOLUTE_PATH> with the full path to your cloned repository
  • Replace <YOUR_INKEEP_API_KEY> with the API key you generated
  • If uv isn't in your system path, use the full path to the uv executable (find it with which uv on MacOS/Linux or where uv on Windows)
  • You can customize the tool name and description in the environment variables to better reflect your content

After completing these steps, restart your Claude Desktop application, and the Inkeep MCP server will be available to provide your documentation content to Claude.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "inkeep-mcp-server" '{"command":"uv","args":["--directory","<YOUR_INKEEP_MCP_SERVER_ABSOLUTE_PATH>","run","-m","inkeep_mcp_server"],"env":{"INKEEP_API_BASE_URL":"https://api.inkeep.com/v1","INKEEP_API_KEY":"<YOUR_INKEEP_API_KEY>","INKEEP_API_MODEL":"inkeep-rag","INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_NAME":"search-product-content","INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_DESCRIPTION":"Retrieves product documentation about Inkeep. The query should be framed as a conversational question about Inkeep."}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "inkeep-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uv",
            "args": [
                "--directory",
                "<YOUR_INKEEP_MCP_SERVER_ABSOLUTE_PATH>",
                "run",
                "-m",
                "inkeep_mcp_server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "INKEEP_API_BASE_URL": "https://api.inkeep.com/v1",
                "INKEEP_API_KEY": "<YOUR_INKEEP_API_KEY>",
                "INKEEP_API_MODEL": "inkeep-rag",
                "INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_NAME": "search-product-content",
                "INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_DESCRIPTION": "Retrieves product documentation about Inkeep. The query should be framed as a conversational question about Inkeep."
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "inkeep-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uv",
            "args": [
                "--directory",
                "<YOUR_INKEEP_MCP_SERVER_ABSOLUTE_PATH>",
                "run",
                "-m",
                "inkeep_mcp_server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "INKEEP_API_BASE_URL": "https://api.inkeep.com/v1",
                "INKEEP_API_KEY": "<YOUR_INKEEP_API_KEY>",
                "INKEEP_API_MODEL": "inkeep-rag",
                "INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_NAME": "search-product-content",
                "INKEEP_MCP_TOOL_DESCRIPTION": "Retrieves product documentation about Inkeep. The query should be framed as a conversational question about Inkeep."
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
