AWS MCP is a server that enables AI assistants like Claude to interact with AWS environments through natural language, allowing you to manage and query AWS resources without using the traditional AWS Console or CLI. It offers a more flexible and secure alternative to Amazon Q.

Installation Requirements

Before installing AWS MCP, ensure your environment has:

  • Node.js
  • Claude Desktop application
  • AWS credentials configured locally (stored in ~/.aws/ directory)

Installation Steps

Clone and Install Dependencies

First, download the source code and install required packages:

git clone https://github.com/ihatesea69/AWS-MCP
cd aws-mcp

Then install dependencies using either pnpm or npm:

pnpm install
# or
npm install

Configuration and Usage

Setting Up Claude Desktop

  1. Open Claude Desktop and navigate to:

    Settings -> Developer -> Edit Config

  2. Add the following to your claude_desktop_config.json file:

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "aws": {
          "command": "npm",
          "args": [
            "--silent",
            "--prefix",
            "/Users/<YOUR USERNAME>/aws-mcp",
            "start"
          ]
        }
      }
    }

    Replace /Users/<YOUR USERNAME>/aws-mcp with the actual path to your project directory.

Starting the Service

Navigate to the directory containing index.ts and run the NPM start command:

npm start

Then restart Claude Desktop. If installed correctly, you'll see a successful MCP connection notification.

Using AWS MCP with Claude

You can start using natural language commands like:

  • "List available AWS profiles"
  • "List all EC2 instances in my account"
  • "Show me S3 buckets with their sizes"
  • "What Lambda functions are deployed in us-east-1?"
  • "List all ECS clusters and their services"

Configuration with nvm

If you're using Node.js through nvm, compile from source first and add this configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "aws": {
      "command": "/Users/<USERNAME>/.nvm/versions/node/v20.10.0/bin/node",
      "args": [
        "<WORKSPACE_PATH>/aws-mcp/node_modules/tsx/dist/cli.mjs",
        "<WORKSPACE_PATH>/aws-mcp/index.ts",
        "--prefix",
        "<WORKSPACE_PATH>/aws-mcp",
        "start"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Replace <USERNAME> and <WORKSPACE_PATH> with your actual system paths.

Key Features

  • Query and edit AWS resources using natural language
  • Support for multiple AWS profiles and SSO authentication
  • Multi-region AWS support
  • Secure credential management (credentials never leave your system)
  • Local execution with your AWS credentials

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "aws" '{"command":"npm","args":["--silent","--prefix","/Users/<YOUR USERNAME>/aws-mcp","start"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "aws": {
            "command": "npm",
            "args": [
                "--silent",
                "--prefix",
                "/Users/<YOUR USERNAME>/aws-mcp",
                "start"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "aws": {
            "command": "npm",
            "args": [
                "--silent",
                "--prefix",
                "/Users/<YOUR USERNAME>/aws-mcp",
                "start"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
