The CoinMarketCap Universal MCP server provides comprehensive access to CoinMarketCap's cryptocurrency data, designed for seamless integration with Cursor. With this server, you can access cryptocurrency listings, quotes, market data, and sentiment indicators directly within your Cursor environment.
Follow these steps to install and set up the CoinMarketCap MCP server:
Clone the repository and enter the project directory:
git clone https://github.com/yourusername/coinmarketcap-mcp.git
cd coinmarketcap-mcp
Install dependencies:
npm install
Configure environment variables:
Create a .env
file in the project root directory with the following content:
CMC_API_KEY=YOUR_COINMARKETCAP_API_KEY
CACHE_ENABLED=true
CACHE_TTL=300
Be sure to replace YOUR_COINMARKETCAP_API_KEY
with your actual CoinMarketCap API key.
Build and run the server:
For development:
npm run dev
For production:
npm run build
npm start
Integrate with Cursor:
COMMAND
node ABSOLUTE_PATH/dist/index.js
ABSOLUTE_PATH
with the full path to your projectThe MCP server provides access to various cryptocurrency data endpoints:
get_cryptocurrency_listings({
limit: 10,
convert: "USD"
})
get_cryptocurrency_quotes({
symbol: "BTC,ETH,SOL",
convert: "USD"
})
get_fear_greed_index({
limit: 7
})

If you encounter issues with the MCP server:
.env
file contains the correct configurationTo add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:
claude mcp add-json "coinmarketcap-fear-greed-index" '{"command":"node","args":["ABSOLUTE PATH/dist/index.js"]}'
See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.
There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file so that it is available in all of your projects.
If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json
file.
To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".
When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file will be opened and you can add your server like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"coinmarketcap-fear-greed-index": {
"command": "node",
"args": [
"ABSOLUTE PATH/dist/index.js"
]
}
}
}
To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json
file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.
Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.
The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.
You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

}
}
}
