This MCP server provides a simple way to store, retrieve, and manage text memories that persist in a local file. The server follows the Model Context Protocol, making it compatible with Claude for Desktop and similar applications that support MCP.

Installation

From Source

To install the Memory MCP Server from source:

  1. Clone the repository
  2. Install dependencies:
    npm install

  3. Build the server:
    npm run build

Running the Server

Start the server with the following command:

npm start -- [storage-path]

The storage-path parameter is optional and specifies the directory where you want to store the memories file. If not provided, it defaults to the current directory.

Setting up with Claude for Desktop

To integrate the memory server with Claude for Desktop:

  1. Open your Claude for Desktop configuration file:

    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  2. Add the server configuration:

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "memory": {
          "command": "node",
          "args": [
            "/path/to/mcp-memory-server/build/index.js",
            "/path/to/storage/directory"
          ]
        }
      }
    }

  3. Restart Claude for Desktop. You may need to force-quit any running Claude processes for the changes to take effect.

Available Tools

The server provides several tools for memory management:

Store Memory

Stores a new text memory with optional tags.

Parameters:

  • content (string, required): The text content to store
  • tags (array of strings, optional): Tags to categorize the memory

Search Memories

Searches for memories by text content or tags.

Parameters:

  • searchTerm (string, optional): Text to search for in the memory content
  • tag (string, optional): Filter memories by this tag

Get All Memories

Retrieves all stored memories.

Parameters: None

Delete Memory

Deletes a specific memory by its ID.

Parameters:

  • id (string, required): ID of the memory to delete

Get Tags Summary

Retrieves a summary of all tags used across memories.

Parameters: None

Example Queries for Claude

Here are some examples of how to use these tools with Claude:

  • "Store this information: The project deadline is March 15, 2025. Tags: work, deadlines"
  • "What memories do I have related to work?"
  • "Show me all my memories"
  • "Delete memory with ID abc123"
  • "What tags have I used in my memories?"

The server stores all memories in a file named memories.json in your specified storage directory.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "memory" '{"command":"node","args":["/path/to/mcp-memory-server/build/index.js","/path/to/storage/directory"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "memory": {
            "command": "node",
            "args": [
                "/path/to/mcp-memory-server/build/index.js",
                "/path/to/storage/directory"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "memory": {
            "command": "node",
            "args": [
                "/path/to/mcp-memory-server/build/index.js",
                "/path/to/storage/directory"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
