The Git Commit Aider MCP Server allows you to make Git commits on behalf of AI, helping you track AI contributions in your codebase. This TypeScript-based MCP server provides a tool to commit staged changes while appending "(aider)" to the committer's name, making it easy to identify AI-assisted commits.

Features

This MCP server provides a single tool called commit_staged which commits staged changes with a specific message. The tool:

  • Requires a message parameter (string) for the commit message
  • Accepts an optional cwd parameter (string) to specify the working directory for the git command
  • Automatically appends "(aider)" to the committer name
  • Uses committer information from environment variables or git config

With this tool installed in your code editor, you can simply ask the AI to "Commit the changes for me" after it has made modifications to your codebase. Commits marked with "(aider)" can be tracked using the aider --stats command to monitor AI contributions to your project.

Installation

To install and use the Git Commit Aider MCP Server, add its configuration to your MCP settings file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "git-commit-aider": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["mcp-git-commit-aider"]
    }
  }
}

The server retrieves committer information from:

  • Environment variables GIT_COMMITTER_NAME and GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL, following Git's convention
  • Output of git config user.name and git config user.email commands if environment variables are not set

Usage

Once installed, the Git Commit Aider MCP Server can be used within your AI-assisted coding environment. When you want the AI to commit changes:

  1. Stage the changes you want to commit using git add commands
  2. Ask the AI to commit the changes with a prompt like "Commit the staged changes with a descriptive message"
  3. The AI will use the commit_staged tool to create a commit with "(aider)" appended to the committer name

Example Prompts

  • "Commit these changes with a message explaining the bug fix"
  • "Create a git commit for the staged changes that describes the new feature"
  • "Commit the current work with an appropriate message"

The AI will generate an appropriate commit message based on the context of your changes and execute the commit with the "(aider)" signature.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "git-commit-aider" '{"command":"npx","args":["mcp-git-commit-aider"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "git-commit-aider": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-git-commit-aider"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "git-commit-aider": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-git-commit-aider"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
