The MCP server for Axiom enables AI agents to query your data using Axiom Processing Language (APL). It implements the Model Context Protocol to allow Claude to access and analyze information stored in your Axiom datasets.

Installation Options

Using Pre-built Binaries

Download the latest built binary from the releases page.

Installing from Source

If you prefer to install from source using Go:

go install github.com/axiomhq/axiom-mcp@latest

Configuration

You can configure the MCP server using one of these three methods:

Using a Configuration File

Create a text file (e.g., config.txt) with the following format:

token xaat-your-token
url https://api.axiom.co
query-rate 1
query-burst 1
datasets-rate 1
datasets-burst 1

Using Command Line Flags

Launch the server with command-line arguments:

axiom-mcp \
  -token xaat-your-token \
  -url https://api.axiom.co \
  -query-rate 1 \
  -query-burst 1 \
  -datasets-rate 1 \
  -datasets-burst 1

Using Environment Variables

Set the following environment variables before launching:

export AXIOM_TOKEN=xaat-your-token
export AXIOM_URL=https://api.axiom.co
export AXIOM_ORG_ID=your-org-id
export AXIOM_QUERY_RATE=1
export AXIOM_QUERY_BURST=1
export AXIOM_DATASETS_RATE=1
export AXIOM_DATASETS_BURST=1

Setting Up with Claude

Create a Configuration File

First, create a basic configuration file:

echo "token xaat-your-token" > config.txt

Configure Claude Desktop App

Open the Claude desktop app configuration file:

code ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Add your MCP server configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "axiom": {
      "command": "/path/to/your/axiom-mcp-binary",
      "args" : ["--config", "/path/to/your/config.txt"],
      "env": {
        "AXIOM_TOKEN": "xaat-your-token",
        "AXIOM_URL": "https://api.axiom.co",
        "AXIOM_ORG_ID": "your-org-id"
      }
    }
  }
}

Note: You only need to specify either the configuration file path or the environment variables, not both.

Available Tools

Once configured, Claude can use these MCP tools to work with your Axiom data:

  • queryApl: Execute APL queries against your Axiom datasets
  • listDatasets: List available Axiom datasets in your account

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "axiom" '{"command":"axiom-mcp","args":["--config","/path/to/your/config.txt"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "axiom": {
            "command": "axiom-mcp",
            "args": [
                "--config",
                "/path/to/your/config.txt"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "axiom": {
            "command": "axiom-mcp",
            "args": [
                "--config",
                "/path/to/your/config.txt"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
