This MCP server implements the Model Context Protocol to send notifications through Pushover.net, allowing AI agents to send real-time alerts to your devices.

Installation

You'll need two credentials from your Pushover.net dashboard:

  • An application token
  • Your user key

Using npx (Quickest Method)

Run the MCP server directly with npx:

npx -y pushover-mcp@latest start --token YOUR_TOKEN --user YOUR_USER

Setting Up With AI Tools

Cursor IDE Integration

Method 1: Global Setup

  1. Run the MCP server using the npx command above
  2. In Cursor IDE, navigate to Cursor Settings > MCP
  3. Click + Add New MCP Server
  4. Complete the form:
    • Name: Pushover Notification (or any name you prefer)
    • Type: command
    • Command: npx -y pushover-mcp@latest start --token YOUR_TOKEN --user YOUR_USER

Method 2: Project-specific Configuration

Add an .cursor/mcp.json file to your project:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pushover": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "pushover-mcp@latest",
        "start",
        "--token",
        "YOUR_TOKEN",
        "--user",
        "YOUR_USER"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Roo Code Integration

  1. Access MCP settings by clicking "Edit MCP Settings" or using the "Roo Code: Open MCP Config" command
  2. Add the following configuration:
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pushover": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "pushover-mcp@latest",
        "start",
        "--token",
        "YOUR_TOKEN",
        "--user",
        "YOUR_USER"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Smithery Installation (Claude Desktop)

Install automatically via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @AshikNesin/pushover-mcp --client claude

Usage

Tool Capabilities

The MCP provides a single tool named send with these parameters:

{
  message: string; // Required: The message to send
  title?: string; // Optional: Message title
  priority?: number;        // Optional: -2 to 2 (-2: lowest, 2: emergency)
  sound?: string; // Optional: Notification sound
  url?: string; // Optional: URL to include
  url_title?: string; // Optional: Title for the URL
  device?: string; // Optional: Target specific device
}

Example MCP Tool Call

{
  "name": "send",
  "params": {
    "message": "Hello from AI",
    "title": "AI Notification",
    "priority": 1
  }
}

Using with AI Agents

Once configured:

  • The tool will appear under "Available Tools" in MCP settings
  • AI agents will automatically use it when appropriate
  • You can explicitly ask the agent to send notifications

By default, agents will request approval before sending notifications. Enable "Yolo mode" in settings to allow automatic sending.

Note: Always replace YOUR_TOKEN and YOUR_USER with your actual Pushover credentials.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "pushover" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","pushover-mcp@latest","start","--token","YOUR_TOKEN","--user","YOUR_USER"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "pushover": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "pushover-mcp@latest",
                "start",
                "--token",
                "YOUR_TOKEN",
                "--user",
                "YOUR_USER"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "pushover": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "pushover-mcp@latest",
                "start",
                "--token",
                "YOUR_TOKEN",
                "--user",
                "YOUR_USER"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
