This MCP server allows you to fetch up-to-date news from newsdata.io using Model Context Protocol. It provides a way to integrate live news data into your applications with simple commands and natural language queries.
You can set up the MCP server in two different ways: by cloning the repository or by using NPX.
If you choose to clone the repository, you'll need to configure your MCP setup with the following JSON configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"news": {
"command": "path_to_your_node",
"args": [
"location_to_your_dist/index.js"
],
"env": {
"NEWS_API_KEY": "API_KEY_FROM_NEWS_DATA",
"NEWS_BASE_URL": "https://newsdata.io"
}
}
}
}
Alternatively, you can use NPX to run the MCP server without cloning the repository:
{
"mcpServers": {
"news": {
"command": "path_to_your_npx",
"args": [
"news-mcp-server"
],
"env": {
"NEWS_API_KEY": "API_KEY_FROM_NEWS_DATA",
"NEWS_BASE_URL": "https://newsdata.io"
}
}
}
}
Once your MCP server is configured, you can query for news using natural language prompts. Here are some examples:
Get latest US news:
Give me latest news from USA trending today.
Get region-specific news in local language:
Give me top news headlines from Nepal in Nepali language.
Query news sources:
Give me news sources from Bhutan.
You can form natural language queries based on your needs for topics, regions, languages, and time periods.
For the server to function properly, you must provide:
NEWS_API_KEY
: Your API key from newsdata.ioNEWS_BASE_URL
: The base URL for the news API (typically "https://newsdata.io")There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file so that it is available in all of your projects.
If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json
file.
To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > MCP and click "Add new global MCP server".
When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file will be opened and you can add your server like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"cursor-rules-mcp": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"cursor-rules-mcp"
]
}
}
}
To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json
file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.
Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.
The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.
You can also explictly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
