The hh-jira-mcp-server is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that integrates with Jira, allowing Claude AI assistants to access and manipulate Jira data. This server connects Claude Desktop with your Jira instance, enabling AI-powered interactions with your Jira tickets.

Installation

Prerequisites

  • Claude Pro subscription (register at https://claude.ai)
  • Claude Desktop application
  • Python environment

Step 1: Install Required Tools

Install Claude Desktop from the official website:

https://claude.ai/download

Install the UV package manager:

brew install uv

Install the keyring package:

uv pip install keyring

Step 2: Store Jira Credentials

Use the keyring tool to securely store your Jira account password:

keyring set hh-jira-mcp-server your-username

Replace your-username with your actual Jira username.

Step 3: Install the MCP Server

Install the hh-jira-mcp-server package:

uv pip install hh-jira-mcp-server

Configuration

Configure Claude Desktop

Locate your Claude Desktop configuration file:

  • MacOS: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Option 1: Using the Published Server

Add the following configuration to your claude_desktop_config.json file:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hh-jira-mcp-server": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "hh-jira-mcp-server"
      ],
      "env": {
        "HH_JIRA_MCP_USER": "your-username",
        "HH_JIRA_MCP_TEAM": "your-team",
        "HH_JIRA_MCP_SEARCH_FILTER": "status in (\"Development: In progress\")"
      }
    }
  }
}

Option 2: Using a Development Version

If you're working with a local version of the server:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hh-jira-mcp-server": {
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "--directory",
        "/path/to/project/hh-jira-mcp-server",
        "run",
        "hh-jira-mcp-server"
      ],
      "env": {
        "HH_JIRA_MCP_USER": "your-username",
        "HH_JIRA_MCP_TEAM": "your-team",
        "HH_JIRA_MCP_SEARCH_FILTER": "status in (\"Development: In progress\")"
      }
    }
  }
}

Environment Variables

Configure the MCP server by adjusting these environment variables:

  • HH_JIRA_MCP_USER: Your Jira username
  • HH_JIRA_MCP_TEAM: Your team identifier in Jira
  • HH_JIRA_MCP_SEARCH_FILTER: JQL filter to limit which tickets are accessible

Usage

After configuration, restart Claude Desktop. The MCP server will be available to Claude AI for accessing your Jira data.

You can now ask Claude questions about your Jira tickets or request it to perform actions in Jira, such as:

  • "Show me my in-progress tickets"
  • "Summarize the status of project XYZ"
  • "Update the description of ticket ABC-123"

The server uses the search filter you specified to determine which tickets are accessible to Claude.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "hh-jira-mcp-server" '{"command":"uvx","args":["hh-jira-mcp-server"],"env":{"HH_JIRA_MCP_USER":"v.pupkin","HH_JIRA_MCP_TEAM":"some-team","HH_JIRA_MCP_SEARCH_FILTER":"status in (\"Development: In progress\")"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "hh-jira-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "hh-jira-mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "HH_JIRA_MCP_USER": "v.pupkin",
                "HH_JIRA_MCP_TEAM": "some-team",
                "HH_JIRA_MCP_SEARCH_FILTER": "status in (\"Development: In progress\")"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "hh-jira-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "hh-jira-mcp-server"
            ],
            "env": {
                "HH_JIRA_MCP_USER": "v.pupkin",
                "HH_JIRA_MCP_TEAM": "some-team",
                "HH_JIRA_MCP_SEARCH_FILTER": "status in (\"Development: In progress\")"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
