This MCP server implementation for GitHub agentic chat provides a bridge between Claude Desktop (or other MCP-compatible clients) and GitHub, enabling natural language interaction with repositories and adding vector search capabilities.

Prerequisites

  • Go 1.21 or later
  • PostgreSQL with pgvector extension
  • GitHub Personal Access Token
  • OpenAI API Key
  • Claude Desktop or other MCP-compatible client

Installation

Step 1: Clone the repository

git clone https://github.com/akhidasTech/github-agentic-chat-mcp.git
cd github-agentic-chat-mcp

Step 2: Set up environment variables

export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token_here
export DATABASE_URL=postgres://user:password@localhost:5432/dbname
export OPENAI_API_KEY=your_openai_api_key_here

Step 3: Prepare PostgreSQL with pgvector

Ensure you have PostgreSQL installed and running, then enable the pgvector extension:

CREATE EXTENSION vector;

Step 4: Build the server

go build -o bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp

Step 5: Configure Claude Desktop

Edit the Claude Desktop configuration file located at: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Add the following configuration:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "github-chat": {
            "command": "/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"
        }
    }
}

Step 6: Restart Claude Desktop

After making these changes, restart Claude Desktop to load the new MCP server configuration.

Using the Available Tools

GitHub Tools

Search GitHub Repositories

Use the search_repositories tool to find GitHub repositories using natural language queries. The tool translates your requests into appropriate GitHub search syntax.

Create Issues

The create_issue tool allows you to create new issues in GitHub repositories directly from your chat interface.

Vector Search Capabilities

Adding Content to Vector Store

Use the add_to_vector_store tool to add documents to the semantic search database.

This tool accepts two parameters:

  • content: The text content to store
  • metadata: A JSON string containing metadata about the content

Example request format:

{
    "content": "This is a document about GitHub Actions",
    "metadata": "{\"type\": \"documentation\", \"tags\": [\"github\", \"ci-cd\"]}"
}

Performing Semantic Searches

The vector_search tool enables semantic searching across your stored documents.

Parameters:

  • query: Your search query in natural language
  • limit: Maximum number of results to return (defaults to 5)

This allows you to find relevant information using natural language queries rather than exact keyword matching.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "github-chat" '{"command":"/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "github-chat": {
            "command": "/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "github-chat": {
            "command": "/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
