This MCP server implementation for GitHub agentic chat provides a bridge between Claude Desktop (or other MCP-compatible clients) and GitHub, enabling natural language interaction with repositories and adding vector search capabilities.
git clone https://github.com/akhidasTech/github-agentic-chat-mcp.git
cd github-agentic-chat-mcp
export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token_here
export DATABASE_URL=postgres://user:password@localhost:5432/dbname
export OPENAI_API_KEY=your_openai_api_key_here
Ensure you have PostgreSQL installed and running, then enable the pgvector extension:
CREATE EXTENSION vector;
go build -o bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp
Edit the Claude Desktop configuration file located at:
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
Add the following configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"github-chat": {
"command": "/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"
}
}
}
After making these changes, restart Claude Desktop to load the new MCP server configuration.
Use the search_repositories
tool to find GitHub repositories using natural language queries. The tool translates your requests into appropriate GitHub search syntax.
The create_issue
tool allows you to create new issues in GitHub repositories directly from your chat interface.
Use the add_to_vector_store
tool to add documents to the semantic search database.
This tool accepts two parameters:
Example request format:
{
"content": "This is a document about GitHub Actions",
"metadata": "{\"type\": \"documentation\", \"tags\": [\"github\", \"ci-cd\"]}"
}
The vector_search
tool enables semantic searching across your stored documents.
Parameters:
This allows you to find relevant information using natural language queries rather than exact keyword matching.
To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:
claude mcp add-json "github-chat" '{"command":"/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"}'
See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.
There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file so that it is available in all of your projects.
If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json
file.
To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".
When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json
file will be opened and you can add your server like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"github-chat": {
"command": "/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"
}
}
}
To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json
file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.
Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.
The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.
You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.
To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:
1. Find your configuration file:
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
2. Add this to your configuration file:
{
"mcpServers": {
"github-chat": {
"command": "/absolute/path/to/bin/github-agentic-chat-mcp"
}
}
}
3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
