This MCP Server provides access to Seq's API endpoints for interacting with your logging and monitoring system through the Model Context Protocol. It enables you to manage signals, events, and alerts directly from compatible applications like Claude Desktop.

Installation

To install the Seq MCP Server:

  1. Clone the repository to your local machine
  2. Install dependencies and build the package:
npm install
npm run build

Configuration

The server requires the following environment variables:

  • SEQ_BASE_URL (optional): Your Seq server URL (defaults to 'http://localhost:8080')
  • SEQ_API_KEY (required): Your Seq API key

Integration with Claude Desktop

To use the Seq MCP Server with Claude Desktop, add it to your configuration file:

On MacOS:

Edit ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

On Windows:

Edit %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Add the following configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "seq": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/path/to/your/mcp-server-seq/build/seq-server.js"],
      "env": {
        "SEQ_BASE_URL": "your-seq-url",
        "SEQ_API_KEY": "your-api-key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Alternatively, if you prefer using npx:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "seq": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-seq"],
      "env": {
        "SEQ_BASE_URL": "your-seq-url",
        "SEQ_API_KEY": "your-api-key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Available Tools

Signals Management

Use the get-signals tool to fetch signals with various filtering options:

  • Filter by owner ID
  • Filter shared/private signals
  • Support for partial matches

Event Management

Use the get-events tool to retrieve events with extensive filtering capabilities:

  • Filter by signal IDs
  • Apply custom filter expressions
  • Configure event count (max 100)
  • Select from flexible time range options
  • Apply date range filtering

Alert Management

Use the get-alertstate tool to retrieve the current state of alerts in your Seq instance.

Available Resources

Signals Listing

Access the signals resource to list all shared signals with detailed information:

  • Signal ID
  • Title
  • Description
  • Sharing status
  • Owner information

Time Range Options

When using the get-events tool, you can specify the following time range options:

  • 1m - Last minute
  • 15m - Last 15 minutes
  • 30m - Last 30 minutes
  • 1h - Last hour
  • 2h - Last 2 hours
  • 6h - Last 6 hours
  • 12h - Last 12 hours
  • 1d - Last day
  • 7d - Last 7 days
  • 14d - Last 14 days
  • 30d - Last 30 days

Troubleshooting

To verify the server is functioning correctly, run the test script:

npm run test-script

This helps diagnose any issues since MCP servers communicate over stdio which can make debugging challenging.

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "seq" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","mcp-seq"],"env":{"SEQ_BASE_URL":"your-seq-url","SEQ_API_KEY":"your-api-key"}}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "seq": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-seq"
            ],
            "env": {
                "SEQ_BASE_URL": "your-seq-url",
                "SEQ_API_KEY": "your-api-key"
            }
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "seq": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-seq"
            ],
            "env": {
                "SEQ_BASE_URL": "your-seq-url",
                "SEQ_API_KEY": "your-api-key"
            }
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
