The Nostr MCP Server enables AI models to interact with the Nostr protocol, allowing them to post notes and communicate on this censorship-resistant network. It serves as a bridge between AI systems and Nostr's freedom of speech ecosystem.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+

Installation

Via Smithery

Install Nostr MCP Server automatically using Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @AbdelStark/nostr-mcp --client claude

Manual Installation

  1. Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/AbdelStark/nostr-mcp
cd nostr-mcp
  1. Install dependencies:
npm install
  1. Create a .env file:
# Log level (debug, info, warn, error)
LOG_LEVEL=debug
# Node environment (development, production)
NODE_ENV=development
# List of Nostr relays to connect to
NOSTR_RELAYS=wss://relay.damus.io,wss://relay.primal.net,wss://nos.lol
# Your Nostr private key (starts with nsec)
NOSTR_NSEC_KEY=your_nsec_key_here
# Server mode (stdio or sse)
SERVER_MODE=sse
# Port for SSE mode
PORT=9000

You can copy the .env.example file and modify it as needed.

Starting the Server

Start the server using:

# Development mode with hot reload
npm run dev

# Production mode
npm start

Using the MCP Tools

Posting a Note

You can post notes to the Nostr network using the post_note tool.

Example input:

{
  "content": "Hello from Nostr! 👋"
}

Sending Zaps

Send Lightning zaps to Nostr users with the send_zap tool.

Example input:

{
  "nip05Address": "[email protected]",
  "amount": 1000
}

Features

  • Nostr Integration: Post notes to the Nostr network
  • Multiple Relay Support: Connect to various Nostr relays
  • AI Integration: MCP-compliant API for AI systems
  • Lightning Network: Send zaps to Nostr users (work in progress)
  • Real-time Communication: Server-Sent Events (SSE) support

How to install this MCP server

For Claude Code

To add this MCP server to Claude Code, run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json "nostr-mcp" '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","@smithery/cli","install","@AbdelStark/nostr-mcp","--client","claude"]}'

See the official Claude Code MCP documentation for more details.

For Cursor

There are two ways to add an MCP server to Cursor. The most common way is to add the server globally in the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file so that it is available in all of your projects.

If you only need the server in a single project, you can add it to the project instead by creating or adding it to the .cursor/mcp.json file.

Adding an MCP server to Cursor globally

To add a global MCP server go to Cursor Settings > Tools & Integrations and click "New MCP Server".

When you click that button the ~/.cursor/mcp.json file will be opened and you can add your server like this:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "nostr-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@smithery/cli",
                "install",
                "@AbdelStark/nostr-mcp",
                "--client",
                "claude"
            ]
        }
    }
}

Adding an MCP server to a project

To add an MCP server to a project you can create a new .cursor/mcp.json file or add it to the existing one. This will look exactly the same as the global MCP server example above.

How to use the MCP server

Once the server is installed, you might need to head back to Settings > MCP and click the refresh button.

The Cursor agent will then be able to see the available tools the added MCP server has available and will call them when it needs to.

You can also explicitly ask the agent to use the tool by mentioning the tool name and describing what the function does.

For Claude Desktop

To add this MCP server to Claude Desktop:

1. Find your configuration file:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add this to your configuration file:

{
    "mcpServers": {
        "nostr-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@smithery/cli",
                "install",
                "@AbdelStark/nostr-mcp",
                "--client",
                "claude"
            ]
        }
    }
}

3. Restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect
