I am an artist. My style is abstract, meaning that the main purpose of my painting is to capture emotions. I live in a poor neighborhood with my mom and four brothers and sisters. I have a wonderful family, but it's still been tough for me growing up. We're even poorer than those living around us, and it's been hard just to get by. Also, it was really difficult for me when my dad died. He had many problems, but I still loved him. I try to work out my feelings with my art; painting is how I escape.

I'm Carlos's friend. He's a great guy, but he needs to loosen up . you know, live a little. I know his dad had a problem with alcohol, but the whole family seems paranoid because of it. I try to help him out, encourage him. He's a really terrific artist, by the way. I bet some day he'll be very successful. He just needs to live a little along the way.

I'm Carlos's older brother. In fact, I'm the oldest in the family, and I know I need to be strong and help the others. I work to help support us financially, but I also think that I should be an example to my brother and sisters. Sometimes it's hard, though. I want to have fun, and I don't want to keep Carlos from having fun, but I don't want to be responsible for anything bad that might happen. What happened to my dad was horrible enough.

LaKeesha                                                                        12% of story

I'm one of Carlos's friends from the art institute. That kid has talent! I think he's the best in the school, but I can see he doesn't trust his own abilities. He doesn't realize how incredible his paintings are. I guess he's somewhat insecure and also very sensitive. My mom, who's an art professor, says artists are often sensitive and emotional people. That's fine, but Carlos really does need to gain more self-confidence. I try to encourage him as best I can.

I am a good friend of Carlos and LaKeesha. Like LaKeesha, I try to help Carlos see the marvelous talent he possesses. I also want him to know that we're his real friends. We care about him, and I hope he knows he can confide in us.

As the narrator, I am the master storyteller! It's up to me to keep the story alive and interesting with each exciting detail. So, I must read everything with expression and excitement!
