ENHANCED SCRIPT TEXT FORMAT!

All Playbooks® Reader's Theater stories now feature an enhanced colorized text format.
The character names are shown both in the left margin and in the legend at the
top of the page. This gives readers two reference points to track their character
parts throughout the story. Both references will be in the same color as the story text.

Using unique colors to identify the text for each character part alleviates anxiety and encourages students to take ownership of their role. According to a Loyola University study, word recognition and reading comprehension improves 27% when text is presented in color compared to bold black fonts, and 35% when presented in color compared to contrasting black fonts.

Playbooks® has a patent on this format, so no other publisher can offer a Reader's Theater script that is multi-level and has color coded dialogue text. This feature eliminates the need for teachers to highlight parts before distributing the story to students.

Success Stories

"Reading fluency is a hot issue that our teachers are examining. We've noticed the recent research findings that link fluency to Reader's Theater and decided to run our own test this summer to see how it works. We found the kids had a much easier time using the color coded format. We're extremely happy with the improvements we're seeing in our students." Kathy B., Reading Specialist, KS

"The majority of my students live in extreme poverty, speak limited English, and have little desire to learn or behave. I was at my wits end trying to motivate them to read until I came across your Reader's Theater stories. Seeing how my students are responding has given me new hope!"

Charlotte S., Reading Specialist , VA

"We have found Reader's Theater is a great reading method to use with alternative school students."

Louise S., Staff Specialist, MS

Improving Fluency in Middle School

"When you're younger, you're learning to read. When you're older, you're expected to comprehend what you're reading. Reading becomes a tool for learning, not a tool that you are learning." (Cutting, 2007)

Many middle school struggling readers are word-by-word readers. They never successfully transitioned from basic decoding and word recognition to developing fluency and comprehension. With so much focus on younger reader intervention, it's critical that these older students not get lost.

Through reading aloud and repeated readings, Reader's Theater can help these struggling middle school readers move beyond reading word by word to understanding the meaning and use of language. Students involved in dramatic readings explore ways of talking and using language for both literal and emotional meaning. Reader's Theater is very adaptive to a variety of learning styles. The combined use of sensory, motor, and mental processes help students develop more fluent reading, greater reading comprehension, and higher motivation to read. The use of Reader's Theater as an instructional method has an enormous impact on students' literacy skills at all ages and abilities. Since Reader's Theater is so adaptable, it's very practical and beneficial to teachers instructing multiple reading levels within a classroom.
