Remember the Fun
of Reading with Why not catch some readers and
put May 2008 is Get Caught Reading Month, sponsored by the Association of American Publishers. The campaign is nationwide and aims to remind students and adults of all ages of the fun of reading. Congresswoman Pat Shroeder, who started the campaign in 1999, states that the phrase, "Get Caught Reading" "is meant to remind people of the joys of reading. It's light, fun and surprising, not serious and preachy." She explains, "There are so many information and entertainment choices competing for our valuable time today that we often put off reading just for enjoyment." Reader's Theater is a great way for kids to have fun while developing a love of reading! Playbooks® allow students to build on each other's enthusiasm and learn from their peers. Playbooks® will encourage students to make reading a habit, as well as improving reading fluency in the short term. So this month, go catch some readers and put them in a read- aloud group! The Get Caught Reading website offers a variety of posters featuring celebrities and cartoon characters "caught reading." Posters are free except for shipping and handling costs. |
Adventures Continue with Playbooks, Inc. announces the exciting and timely sequel to The Great Rhyme Travel Machine. In the original story, sixth grade students Marcus, Melinda, and Kelly create a "pretend time travel machine" for their school's invention fair. But magically, it works, and transports Amelia Earhart and Thomas Edison to their classroom! In The Great Rhyme Travel Machine Presents: African American Heroes, Kelly plans to run for Sixth Grade Class president but is discouraged to find that no United States presidents have shared her skin color or been female. The Great Rhyme Travel Machine surprises them with new travelers from the past, including George Washington Carver and Shirley Chisholm, who provide guidance and inspiration for Kelly, Marcus, and Melinda. The Playbook® includes social studies content, recounting the groundbreaking accomplishments of the famous characters portrayed. Racial and gender boundaries are broken down, a valuable lesson in today's society. The storyline captivates readers with the excitement of a school election, something they can relate to, while at the same time inspiring young people to pursue their goals.

The Great Rhyme Travel An Original Playbook® Story Written by: Gregory Brown |
||
Story Synopsis: As Summersville students listen to their teacher, Miss Chalk, read from her long lost diary, they are deeply inspired. One entry, detailing the famous “I Have A Dream” speech, leaves twelve year old Kelly spellbound. Motivated to do something important, she decides to run for Sixth Grade Class President! Unfortunately, her drive is short lived. Realizing there’s never been a historical president with green eyes, dark skin and pretty long braids, she feels defeated. To keep their frustrated friend from dropping out of the election, Melinda and Marcus reactivate The Great Rhyme Travel Machine for some answers. What follows is a moving lesson that teaches kids what being a leader really means. Endearing childhood versions of George Washington Carver and Shirley Chisholm travel through time to motivate Kelly and her friends. |
