Take me out to the ballpark.... Celebrate 162 years of baseball fun this June. It all began back in the 1800’s with a group of young professionals. They got together for fun and played a game with bats, balls and bases and called it “base ball.” Little did they know that the gentleman’s game they played in a vacant field on June 19, 1846 in Hoboken, New Jersey, would become an enduring part of American life, capturing the hearts of young and old alike.
Baseball, America’s favorite pastime, is a great way to teach kids about math (batting averages), moments of abiding historic importance (breaking the “color” barrier), and getting along with others (being a team player). Our engaging story, The Baseball Equation, not only builds reading fluency, it provides thought- provoking ideas about how Math can relate to baseball. |

The Baseball Equation

Tyler was great at math. In fact, he was great at all school subjects. But what he really wanted to do was play baseball. His friends tried to help him, his coach encouraged him, but he just couldn’t get it. Some of the kids at school made fun of him, and he would dread having to go out onto the field when it was time to play. One Saturday, he was determined he would practice until he played well, but even with his best efforts, he couldn’t make any progress. Luckily for Tyler, the school janitor had been watching, and together they figured out a formula that would use Tyler’s strengths to his advantage. For the first time, Tyler saw baseball from a new angle. But would this information help his game? Would Tyler ever be good at baseball? |
