Reader's Theater is ideal for Title I instruction because it fulfills the requirements of "Repeated Guided Oral Reading" while being easy to implement and maintain within a program. With Playbook multi-leveled roles, the needs of students of many reading abilities are met with one story which they can read together, each at their own confidence and ability level. This arrangement creates reading role models which are an important part of building fluency.

Reader's Theater is also an innovative, measurable, and sustaining teaching method that meets stimulus fund requirements for both supplemental reading materials and staff development. Playbooks, Inc. provides a grant narrative helpful for supporting Reader's Theater under the Title One grant. If you'd like a copy of this narrative, which also discusses methods for pre- and post assessment of Reader's Theater, please contact us by telephone at 1-800-375-2926.

Reader's Theater Exercise 24:
Classic Christmas Poem Adapted to Reader's Theater for the Classroom

(Image) Elves from The Night Before Christmas Script

Last month's exercise helped you utilize paired reading to help your younger and struggling students. This month's exercise will help you maintain productive classroom activity as students look forward to Winter Break. This activity is a Reader's Theater version of the classic poem, "The Night Before Christmas," designed for Grades 2 - 6.

With three cheerful elves as the narrators, along with the characters of Santa Claus and Mr. and Mrs. Darling, the story allows students to each play an active role instead of simply reciting the poem as an outsider. The script holds the fluency-building strength of Reader's Theater and is even multi-leveled, like most of our stories, so students of different abilities can each read at their own levels while enjoying the story together.

The Reader's Theater Exercise comes with a Recommended Reader Assignment Guide to help you determine and record which student should read each role based on the difficulty of the part.

Story Synopsis:  In this positive retelling of a classic tale, a cheerful young traveler comes upon a town facing a difficult depression. The townspeople are grumpy and worried about feeding their families, but the traveler has a secret he hopes can help them out in more ways than one! Nobody believes him when he says he can make a delicious soup using a stone as the main ingredient, but they are intrigued. As the traveler comments that adding extra ingredients such as carrots or onions would really make the best stone soup, the townspeople's generosity begins to shine though! Read this delightful story to see how the townspeople set aside their fears and learn how to help one another as members of the community through hard times?
