Non-Reproducible Color-Coded Scripts
Can Cost You Less in the Long Run

Many reading professionals have realized that when it comes to Reader’s Theater, using color to identify character roles is dynamically effective. With colorized dialogue, students can quickly identify their roles and size up the amount they are to read on each and every page. This gives them a sense of security knowing when and how much they will be responsible for reading aloud, and it also gives them a sense of ownership and importance in their role.

Only Playbooks® Reader’s Theater has the legal right and patent for presenting and printing the actual dialogue text (not just the character names in the margin) in different colors while also providing roles at different reading levels.

While many copy-cat publishers skirt around these patents by putting "just the character names shown in the margin in color and multi-leveling," or putting the dialogue in color without multi-leveling, these formats don’t help students fully identify or read their roles confidently. Multi-leveled dialogue is crucial to student success and colorized dialogue improves confidence, performance, comprehension and retention.

Color scripts that come in reproducible activity books, and black and white scripts, can cost you more than you think, both now and in the long run. Without bound covers, these paper scripts usually won't last into a second school year because of student handling, leaving teachers to reproduce them again each and every year. This cost can add up to more than purchasing a bound set of books with rich color quality in both text and illustrations. Here's a potential example:

6 Color-Coded Scripts with 14 pages each
copied for 6 readers
at 49 cents per color copy page
      Cost to re-produce:  $41.16
   Cost to reproduce e
ach year for 5 years: $205.80

6 Black/White Scripts
with 14 pages each
copied for 6 readers
at 8 cents per black copy page
      Cost to re-produce:  $6.72
(does not have the readability value of color)
Cost to reproduce each year for 5 years: $33.60

6 Color-Coded fully bound 14-page Playbooks® in a full Small Group set with Teacher's Guide, Role Assignment Charts, and Performance Award Certificates all packaged in a handled vinyl bag*
                 Cost to purchase:  $33.00
Cost to reproduce each year for 5 years: $0

*Cost shown is for "Doing the Dinosaur Dip", an average sized Playbook® story for grades K-3. Playbook story set prices vary based on grade level, content, length, etc.)

The better value for you, and ultimately your students, is Playbooks® "all-inclusive" durable bound sets of Colorized and Multi-leveled Reader's Theater.

Help Students Recover
from Summer Brain Drain
with Brain Teasers!

(Image) Back to School Picture

Over the summer months, students generally lose one to three months of learning from the previous year. Teachers find themselves spending too much time reviewing the previous year's material before moving on to new things. It is recommended that parents keep their children practicing reading and math over the summer, or at least begin reviewing these subjects a few weeks before school starts. Once school begins, it's important to get your students' brains working at top performance again as quickly as possible to speed up the re-learning process.

In this month's featured story, The Coopersville Capers, third grade students return from summer break only to wreak havoc against their classmates instead of focusing on their lessons. After several crazy pranks, the kids learn that trying to "get even" doesn't solve anything, but not before their new teacher gets stuck in the middle of the mess!

Kids can be mischievous, especially at the beginning of the school year! To get students on task as quickly as possible, try using engaging classroom activities. Reading and math skills need attention, and Reader's Theater is great way to make reading fun as the year begins. However, your students' brains may need a jump-start! "Brain teasers" are fascinating and require students to exercise their brains in ways they are not used to. Below is an example of a "lateral thinking" brain teaser:

One day, two mothers and two daughters went shopping for shoes. Their shopping spree was successful — each bought a pair of shoes, and all together, they had three pairs. How is this possible?

Answer: Only three people went shopping: a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter — but the mother is also the grandmother's daughter!

For more brain teasers that require reasoning, logic, lateral thinking, and even math, click here. The document may be printed out for classroom use, with the answers on a separate sheet.
