Observing
Earth Day in the Classroom

This year, Earth Day is on Tuesday, April 22. This holiday is a great opportunity to create a fun lesson that includes Science and Character Education. Encourage your students to contribute to their communities in Earth-friendly ways.

1) For a writing prompt, ask your students to write about something they can do to help the Earth. The best essays can be shared during morning announcements.

2) Collect used printer cartridges from home and school and recycle them. Funds can be used to plant trees around the school.

3) Conserve paper by using both sides of a page in student notebooks. Buy recycled paper and recycle used paper in the classroom.

Earth Day 2008!

There are actually two Earth Days! The first is celebrated on the Vernal Equinox in March (either the 20th or 21st) and is recognized annually by the United Nations. The second and more widely known is celebrated by 175 countries on April 22nd. It was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson in order to increase political awareness of environmental issues. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has become a time to celebrate gains we have made and create new visions to accelerate environmental progress. Earth Day and every day is a time to act to protect our planet.

Our featured Playbook® this month, Bug Off!, shows how important insects are in maintaining the Earth's health. Written all in rhyme, the story is sure to capture young students' imaginations. With personable bug characters, this story reinforces the idea that all inhabitants of our planet must work together to keep the Earth a pleasant place to live. Students will see as well that you don't have to be "big" or grown up to make an impact!

BUG OFF!
An Original PlaybooStory

Content for Grades K-2
Reading Stages 1-3

Written by: Sharon Brinkerhoff
Illustrated by: Antonio Nilo

Story Synopsis: Matt didn't like bugs! In fact, he wished they would all just bug off. One day, while Matt was trying to eat lunch in his backyard, four bugs came to visit him. They bugged him, of course, and worse than that, they wouldn't leave! Matt had no choice but to listen to what they had to say and was quite surprised with what he learned! Bug Off! is an "Early Reader" story presented in rhyme for Stage 1 and 2 readers.

Let us help you start your
Reader's Theater program now!

It's easy, and can accomodate any budget. There are numerous stories available for grades K-12, which can be ordered as individual title sets (Small Group Sets) or by grade level span (Grade Level Kits). We can help you choose titles and kits to fit your student culture and your budget.

The Grade Level Kits (including those designed for Summer School) have a great price/value. In these kits, teacher-favorite stories are packaged with 6 reader copies each, which creates a price savings over the Small Group Sets that can sometimes have 7, 8 or 9 reader copies each. For these stories, readers are simply assigned multiple roles (as recommended in the kit) with the 6-copy sets included in the Grade Level Kits. Also included are Award Certificates, a Teachers' Guide and Lesson Plan, an Implementation Video on DVD, and Cross-curricular Activity Workbooks for each reader for every story.

Grade Level Kit for Grades 1-2 - $349
(includes 6 copies each of 8 different stories and workbooks)

The Small Group Sets include one story each while the Grade Level Kits include 4-8 stories each. If you need only a small number of titles, the Small Group Sets are more practical, but for more titles and ongoing programs, the Grade Level Kits offer more stories and variety (along with a cross-curricular workbook for each reader for each story). Teachers don't have to make copies! Mini-costumes can also be added separately.

If budget is not an issue, then the choice is simple and easy. Order our Master Set which includes 5 Grade Level Kits spanning Grades 1-6, with a total of 30 different stories in small group sets for only $1,349.00 (includes both original and classic stories).
